The FI movement is growing as more people realize the importance of financial independence. Some people are saving enough money to retire at 35 or 40 years old! How is this possible? Join us as we explore the basics of personal finance from an FI perspective. We will investigate the strategies you can use to successfully make money work for you so that you don't have to keep working for money! I am a social studies educator with a passion for personal finance. I am certified to teach economics, and have a strong knowledge in debt reduction strategies, budgeting and saving. I am also an entrepreneur and currently own an educational consulting business. Over the past few years I have educated myself on the principles of Financial Independence and our family is now debt free! I wish someone had shared more financial tips with me when I was younger and I am excited about sharing what I have learned with you! I have taught a variety of social studies courses in both the traditional classroom and online environment for over 13 years. I love making history come to life through first hand accounts, images and stories. While my background is in middle and high school education, I have worked with younger (and older) learners as well. As a homeschooling mom of two (ages 5 and 8) I love the Outschool concept and how it enables teachers to personalize learning for all! Having fun while we learn is so important! I focus on keeping the classroom environment accepting of all students while delving into these important topics.
No materials are needed for the course. Having a pen and paper is helpful for note taking. Learners will be provided with the course notes, a template for tracking spending and income and resources to explore after class.

As with any financial topics, I remind learners that they should gather information about investing from a variety of sources. Caregivers, friends, books, financial advisors, etc. I do not give specific financial advice to students in class, although I do share a variety of investing ideas and resources for further consideration. One of the after class assignments is for students to chat with caregivers about what they have learned and share and discuss their ideas for saving and budgeting. To aid caregivers with this conversation, all of our notes and resources from the class will be posted in the classroom so that you can check them out with your learner.
