Take action. Share your message. Build safer communities. Join us all week during this August camp. After learning a brief history of protest art, we will dive into making our Protest Stones. Our class meets for 75 minutes, long enough to finish a rock (or several) each class. We will talk and hang out while we work. You can expect to be welcomed as yourself, while getting to know new friends. Important note: Check out the supply list and make sure you have time to order or pick up whatever supplies you will need before our first class. *Monday - Learn about Protest Art. Black Lives Matter Themed rock *Tuesday - Ending Sexism/Feminism *Wednesday - LGBTQIA+ Pride *Thursday - Free Choice - Ideas: Climate Change, COVID Awareness, Specific Other Awareness (ex: Autism) I'm an experienced health and sex educator and an activist, living outside NYC. I like to join public protests when possible, and I drum in a women's protest drumline. However when I can't get out, I create different types of protest art to express my values and build up community energy and support for issues. I'm not a trained artist and you don't need to be either. I create projects that use the skills and materials I have easily available. I have been doing this work since I was a teenager and love working with young people and teens. It's so fun to talk and hang out while creating meaningful art. PROTEST STONES: In this class you will complete your rocks, plus learn tips and tricks to make sure they look good and last. Keep these stones, gift them to family and friends or leave them in public areas. Protest Stones is inspired by the Kindness Rocks movement. You can further the conversation about what's important to you and use your art to spread important messages. There are so many ways to be involved in social movements and this is one!

In this camp, we will be discussing sociopolitical topics and current events on the following themes - Black Lives Matter, Trans-inclusive Feminism, Gender and Sexual Identity, Climate Change and more (depending upon issues learners raise). I will share a brief 5-10 minute overview of the theme area and focus. The information shared will be general and informative - defining terms, offering popular context for the movement, sharing reasoning for dissenting opinions.
While we create the stones, I will help facilitate discussion that encourages each child to share their thinking, have a chance to hear thoughts from others, feel valued, and be able to shine. As an experienced health educator, I use my facilitation skills to draw out the thinking of the young people in the group, and refer them back to their most important educators in their lives - their family and community members.
If you or your child are interested in this class and want to clarify any questions or concerns about the subject matter, please do not hesitate to reach out. I am aware that the values expressed in these activities are not shared by everyone and therefore this camp would not be a good choice for all young people or families. I look forward to having your child join us if it is a good fit.
