Children actually experience that thinking before buying does NOT mean you never get to do or buy anything fun! It just means that you plan your spending in order to avoid being disappointed (buyer's remorse), reduce waste, and improve family harmony, all while protecting the planet! Because items purchased after more careful consideration actually get used, versus going into landfills.
My formal education is in Economics. I worked for a global bank as a Risk Analyst before my family was born. My family is now grown. I have been teaching kids how to think before they buy for over 8 years now - and I love it! Thinking before buying is the cornerstone of being money-smart because it allows school-aged children to practice getting and using (at first basic) financial information to make their lives better. Asking and answering simple questions about typical childhood purchases very naturally reveals that anyone can, and should want, to ask questions about money! This is why I believe giving kids the habit of thinking before buying is one of the best gifts ever. And - it's not that hard a gift to give.

GiftingSense.org (we use the Gifting Sense DIMS SCORE® calculator in workshop) was recognized at both the 2022 and 2023 Money Awareness & Inclusion Awards: As one of the best Non-Profit School-Aged Financial Education Programs available today in 2022, and as the Runner-Up for the SKBI Sustainable Finance Literacy Prize in 2023.

The only homework is that we ask children to come to workshop with a possible purchase in mind, and an image or photo of the item or experience in question. Every student receives a pdf summary of all the math and thinking they have done when calculating the DIMS - Does It Make Sense? Score for a possible purchase. They can embed an image into that summary, which is particularly helpful if they are going to forward it to out-of-town family members who may have asked what your son or daughter might like to receive for an upcoming holiday or birthday gift.

Before you know it, your kids will be asking themselves "What's the DIMS Score?" before placing an item on a wish-list. Your family will be able to discuss the pros and cons of possible purchases in a relaxed but structured fashion, because you'll be armed with all the relevant information, in advance of having to make a decision. Parents are shocked to see children change their minds about a possible purchase after calculating the DIMS Score. Kids are shocked to see how quickly their parents get behind a request when it is made in advance, with thought and manners. Fewer, better quality requests to spend, improves family harmony.

If your children want to print off the shareable summary of all the math and thinking they have done, they will need access to a printer. Please visit the site to learn more. Please do not hesitate to ask any questions you may have.
