This course is filled with hands on activities and experiments that will help them understand the difficult concepts of chemistry. We will be using many items already found around the home to enforce the topics taught in this course. This course will help learners develop an interest in science chemistry and maybe even decide to follow a career path in chemistry! The course will include presentations, guided notes, demonstrations, class discussions, review games, hands on activities and...
Learners will improve their knowledge of chemistry through direct instruction, peer interaction and hands on learning.
I've been teaching middle school comprehensive science since 2014 and I taught 5th-grade science prior to moving to middle school. I currently help design activities that support the 7th & 8th-grade curriculum for all of the science teachers. I served on the Science Symposium planning and implementation committee for the Florida Department of Education. I also have a master's degree in reading and writing, and I am a firm believer in reading and writing in the content area.
Course Supplies: Meeting 1: Objects to represent protons, neutrons and electrons (I will be using beads) Meeting 2: 9 different colored pencils or crayons Meeting 3: 2 beakers or cups, Gobstoppers (can be purchased on Amazon), colored pencils, timer, warm water and cold water Meeting 4: One empty plastic soda or water bottle, 1/2 cup of vinegar, 9” balloon, baking soda (we will fill the balloon ½ way with baking soda), funnel Meeting 5: an empty 16 oz. plastic soda or water bottle, ½ cup 3% hydrogen peroxide, dish detergent, food coloring, 1 teaspoon or half a packet of yeast dissolved in warm water, funnell, cake pan or container to catch the elephant’s toothpaste Meeting 6: toothpicks and assorted colors of gummy bears Meeting 7: Materials: variety of household substances to test using pH paper, which can be ordered on Amazon. I will be modeling testing sprite, laundry detergent, vinegar, baking soda dissolved in water and glass cleaner so testing is optional. Meeting 8: one packet of Pop Rocks candy and 2-3 pieces of Zotz candy. Both can be purchased on Amazon. You won’t want to miss this lab!
Blooket, Kahoot and Gimkit will be used to play review games throughout the course. Google Drive will be used to share handouts for the course. Nearpod will be used to present content during class. YouTube will be used only during class when I share a few videos.
