*Though not required, it is helpful to have taken Middle School Government: Session 1 and Session 2 prior to this class.

In this six class course, students will be exposed to all 27 amendments to the United States Constitution.  
        -An in-depth examination of the Bill of Rights will culminate in students reflecting on the question of responsibilities that come     
         with rights 
        -Students will explore each of the five freedoms of First Amendment
        -Learners will gain an understanding of what was happening in the country that led to certain amendments 
        -Important and age appropriate Supreme Court decisions will be reviewed

The class will involve discussion/question and answer, lecture, note taking, slides, and in class worksheets to reenforce concepts.  After each lesson, optional homework sheets will be sent out to help solidify the concepts of the lesson and grow their analytical skills through thought/opinion based questions.

Week 1 - Why a Bill of Rights?
                First Amendment Focus - The Five Freedoms of the First Amendment

Week 2 - First Amendment Supreme Court cases
               Tinker v. Des Moines
               Wallace v. Alabama

Week 3 - 4th, 5th, and 6th Amendments
                Living in a country where the accused have protections

Week 4 - Voting Amendment Focus (15th, 17th, 19th, 23rd, 24th, 26th)

Week 5 - Ninth Amendment Focus
                  -The importance of claiming unlisted rights
               Amendment Overview

Week 6 - Rights and Responsibility
                   -Is there responsibility that comes with rights?

Students should have the ability to do basic writing in order to take notes and do the in class worksheets.  The age range for this class is 11-14 year olds and is best geared towards middle school age students.

Students are highly encouraged to continue on to Middle School Government Session 4.
