This online Mesoamerica class will explore the rich history, culture, and legacy of Mesoamerican civilizations, including the Olmecs, Maya, Toltecs, and Aztecs. Students will gain an understanding of these societies' achievements, governance, religion, daily life, and their lasting influence on modern cultures. We’ll cover a wide range of topics, including: The origins of Mesoamerican civilizations. The social and political structures of the Olmecs, Maya, and Aztecs. Achievements in agriculture, writing, mathematics, and astronomy. The religious beliefs and rituals of these cultures. The rise and fall of empires like Tenochtitlan and Teotihuacan. The impact of European contact and colonization on Mesoamerica. How is your class structured? The class will be divided into modules, each focusing on a specific civilization or theme. Each module will include a mix of video lectures, activities, and assessments: Introduction and overview of Mesoamerica. In-depth exploration of each major civilization. Thematic discussions on topics like religion, trade, and cultural exchanges. Culminating project to showcase understanding. I will use a variety of teaching methods to make the material engaging and interactive. These include: Slides and visual aids: To present key information and highlight artifacts, maps, and artwork. Video clips: Short documentaries and visuals to bring the history to life. Games and activities: Quizzes, interactive timelines, and challenges to reinforce learning. My teaching style is student-centered, interactive, and collaborative. I aim to create a welcoming and inclusive environment where students feel encouraged to ask questions, share perspectives, and connect the material to their own lives. I hold a Bachelor’s Degree in History with a minor in Mexican American Studies, which provided me with a strong foundation in Mesoamerican history and culture. My passion for this subject has driven me to dedicate years to teaching and sharing this fascinating history with students.
In addition to my formal education, I had the opportunity to study in the Spanish cities of Valencia, Madrid, and Barcelona. This experience deepened my understanding of Spanish history and its connections to the Americas, enhancing my ability to teach topics like colonization and cultural exchange.
I have been teaching Mexican American Studies at the high school level in Dallas for several years, focusing on topics like Mesoamerican civilizations, colonization, and cultural identity. My experience includes creating engaging lesson plans that blend lectures, interactive activities, and multimedia resources to make history accessible and exciting for students.
In addition to classroom teaching, I tutor students online in Mexican American Studies, tailoring lessons to individual learning styles and needs. My approach emphasizes understanding history not just as a series of events, but as a way to connect with and appreciate diverse cultures.
