Outschool Learners should expect to spend the session in conversation about prior lessons and skills. I may also ask the student to demonstrate their knowledge on the white board or provide additional instruction if appropriate. The purpose of this assessment is for parent and learner awareness; to know which math class will be a good fit. During the past year, many learners have been in transition or asked to stay home (by no fault of their own). With schools re-opening this year, many parents are requesting an evaluation/assessment to know where to place their students next year. This assessment will give you and your learner confidence in knowing where your student is with math skills to make informed decisions going forward. The gap analysis provides unique and useful information. Math is different from other subjects such that concepts build upon one-another week over week and year over year. When a student experiences a gap in learning, they can often “get by” for a short period of time until the gap begins to get larger. Students experience gaps in their learning for many reasons. Gaps in math can remain hidden for years and inevitably show up around middle-school or high-school. If a gap goes undetected for too long, the effects can be very serious. The student eventually gets to a place where learning stops because they don’t “get it”. The most devastating effect is a feeling of being incapable, or not being smart, which translates to a loss of student confidence. The great news is that gaps are easily resolved once identified. After attending this session, each learner/parent will receive a written report within 72 hours. The report will show gaps in learning (if any), recommendations for resolving those gaps, and current placement level.

I have been teaching math for 24 years. My experience ranges from practical math to Algebra, Geometry and beyond. Teaching students with IEPs and special needs has helped me become a better instructor by learning to effectively teach students with different learning styles.
Math is like a foreign language when it is first introduced to students. As students progress into Pre-Algebra and beyond, the language of math becomes complex with words and symbols they have never seen before. My teaching style emphasizes concepts and proofs along with facts and formulas.
I believe learning concepts along with facts and formulas is the bridge to success. Students’ confidence increases significantly when they can apply a formula and actually understand what is being taught. My greatest reward comes when a student's eyes light up because they finally “get it”! Math is Fun!
