Class #1: The Essay During this course, students will learn how to construct a basic five paragraph essay: Introduction (hook, thesis statement) Body Paragraphs (topic sentence, supporting details, closing/transitional sentence) Conclusion ("upside-down" introduction) Students will be given three prompts to choose from. They will have one week to complete and submit their first draft essay. All essays submitted on time will be reviewed and receive feedback. Students will have the opportunity to complete revisions and resubmit their essays. The first submission will receive detailed feedback. The final submission will receive a weighted rubric grade. *Both feedback forms are attached and available to view upon enrollment. **If a percentage grade is not desired, please let me know. Objectives: Students will learn how to construct a basic five paragraph essay. Students will learn how to develop an outline. Students will learn the elements of an essay. Completed essays should be submitted to the Outschool classroom as a typed .doc, .docx, .pdf, .rtf, or through GoogleDocs. Essays may also be typed and submitted in the chat function if a writing/typing application is unavailable. The teachers offering this course have experience teaching writing at upper levels including high school, adult basic education, and university students. Learners will have the opportunity to submit their work for feedback and review. This course has a higher level of expectations than the middle school writing course; however, high school aged learners that are just starting on essays or need more guidance are encouraged to enroll.
