Welcome to my classroom! Ideas and valuable skills are never in short supply in this class! You’ll never hear, “I don’t know how to write an essay!” again. Instead, students will learn essential essay elements and strategies that will strengthen and sharpen their writing skills in this class. Techniques learned in this class will benefit your writer for years to come.

Class Structure:
      📕 Welcome to class!
~ All learners are individually greeted and welcomed to class.
~ Your child’s safety in my classroom is of the utmost importance. **Per Outschool’s safety and learner privacy policies, all learners must have working audio and video. Therefore, students must turn their videos on at the beginning of each class to verify their identity. No exceptions will be made. If you have questions about this policy or are concerned about technical trouble before entering the classroom, please reach out to Outschool Support.
📕 Supply check-in: Do you have what you need to succeed!
~ Students must come to class prepared with two items — something to write with and something to write on.
~ If your student plans to type their story during the second part of the class, they should come prepared with an open Google Doc or another word processor.
      What are we learning today?
~ Class learning goals and outcomes will be discussed.
      📕 Discussion of class rules:
          ~ Have fun
          ~ Do your best
          ~ Ask questions
~ Be respectful and kind to yourself and the other learners in our class.
      📕 Writing Prompts:
~ Learners will each have a turn to read aloud one (or more) teacher-provided prompts to the class.
       📕 Mini-Lesson/Working Sessions:
~ Students will participate in our weekly mini-lesson.
                   Examples of topics discussed include:
                          ✏️ Week 1: Introduction/Topics
                          ✏️ Week 2: Expository Essays
                          ✏️ Week 3: Student Working Session 1
                          ✏️ Week 4: Opinion/Persuasive Essays
                          ✏️ Week 5: Student Working Session 2
                          ✏️ Week 6: Editing/Revising/Publishing/Final Copies
       📕 Writing Time:
~ Students will have approx. 20-30 minutes to work on writing their essays. During this time, students can expect to conference with the teacher. After our conference, students will return to their writing to apply the feedback they received to revise and expand upon their drafts.
       📕 Share Time:
~ All interested students will have time to share what they have written during the class.
       📕 Class Summary & Review:
~ Students will have the opportunity to ask questions about the lesson, their writing, etc.
       📕 See you next time!
~ After class (OPTIONAL): You may submit your student’s work to me via Outschool messenger. I will provide personalized feedback and encouragement to share with your learner.

🗒 A Note from Ms. Lindsay 🗒
A certain level of independence is required for this class. While I am here to help your learner succeed, it is essential to remember that this is a group course. Learners can expect that I will check in individually at least twice during the writing portion of the class. Every student will have the opportunity to share what they have written during the class that day. If time allows, I will allow students to read more, but we must be respectful of all learners and ensure each student has an opportunity to share their writing from that day.

I assure you that you won’t find a more supportive and encouraging teacher. I want your learner to succeed in this class, and I will do everything to facilitate that. If you have questions, please reach out to me.

⭐️ Important Reminders / Outschool & Class Policies ⭐️

* Mute/learner removal reminder: There are times in class where “muting” all learners is necessary. If I plan to mute the class, I inform the class first. If a learner consistently calls out, is disrespectful, or purposefully causes a disruption, I must mute that learner. Under rare circumstances, I may remove a learner from the classroom due to unmanageable behavioral issues. If this occurs, I will reach out to the learner’s parents within 24 hours of the incident to discuss the next steps.

学習到達目標
During this 6-week class, students will participate in a weekly mini-lesson designed to teach them all about writing five-paragraph essays. Students will also learn different strategies and techniques to sharpen their writing skills. Students will have the opportunity to apply what they have learned by writing independently in response to various writing prompts. This way, students learn and immediately apply different writing principles, piece by piece, as they develop their writing skills. Students will also develop and improve their public speaking skills by sharing their work with the class.

I have nearly a decade of teaching experience in various settings. I've taught in the brick-and-mortar setting as well as online. Writing is a topic that I am personally passionate about. While working in the brick-and-mortar school setting, I would frequently work 1:1 with special needs students to help them become better writers and accomplish the goals outlined in their IEP's.

My degrees/certifications are:
• Associate's degree in Early Childhood Education
• Bachelors degree in Elementary Education
