Did you know that most ballet terms are derived from the French language? In this class, students will gain a better understanding of the French terms (and some Italian terms) used in their ballet classes. When students fully grasp the terminology, they can perform more effectively in class. This understanding of the ballet lexicon enables them to participate in classes globally and accurately interpret the expectations and instructions provided.

During each lesson, new ballet terms will be presented. Students will make flash cards for each new term and learn how to read, say, and correctly spell (with acccents) each word. Ballet terms are color-coded for easier studying: Red = French, Green = Italian, Blue = English

NOTE: Please have plenty of blank index cards available OR sheets of paper sliced into 6-8 pieces. Writing the words into a notebook after class is okay but the flash cards will be needed for some assignments.

After learning the definitions of the new words, students will see a demonstration of the movements. Demonstrations will be either performed by me or viewed from a YouTube link (posted in the classroom announcements).

Assignments: All assignments will be completed and posted by the student after completing each assignment. Completion of assignments are encouraged for better understanding and memorization of the vocabulary terms learned in this class. Assignments may include building a phrase, create and demo a combination (video), name that term, match the terms (PDF), fill in the blanks (PDF), and others. PDFs will need to be printed for your learner and have them ready for class OR have them saved in a digital file that they can edit on their computer (draw lines to match or fill in a word).

Parents are responsible for the safety of their student/s. A space of at least 4 feet by 4 feet must be clear of any trip hazards or dangerous objects. Students may wear ballet shoes or participate barefoot (no socks). Health & Safety: You understand that dance and physical exercise carry inherent risks of injury. You should consult with a physician or healthcare professional before beginning any physical activity to ensure that it is appropriate for your fitness level and personal health. Personal Responsibility: You are responsible for creating a safe and appropriate environment for your participation, including wearing proper attire, using non-slippery surfaces, and ensuring adequate space. If at any point you feel discomfort, dizziness, or pain, you should stop immediately and seek medical advice. Instruction & Modifications: While the instructor provides guidance and modifications, it is your responsibility to gauge your ability to perform the exercises. Any modifications or variations are to be performed at your own risk. Waiver of Liability: By engaging in these online classes, you waive any and all claims against the instructor, the company, or any associated parties for injuries, damages, or losses that may occur from your participation in the class, whether caused by negligence or otherwise. Intellectual Property: The content provided in this class is for personal use only. Reproduction, distribution, or unauthorized sharing of class materials is prohibited without written consent. Class Size Minimum: If the class size minimum is not met, the class may still be held but finish early, depending on the material covered for each lesson. Fewer students often results in moving through the lesson much faster. The class fee, however, remains the same, because the same amount of material is being covered during each lesson. (OR) Students may be combined from multiple sections of the same class into one class time, creating one full class instead of several partially-filled classes. You will be notified in advance if this second option is required. I understand that a schedule change may interfere with other classes you are taking on Outschool. Make-Up Classes: Although rare, when a class requires rescheduling, the make-up class will be held on a Saturday.

I have found, in my teaching experience, especially when subbing, that there is a learning gap between what students think they hear their teacher say in ballet class and their actual understanding and pronunciation of the correct words and terminology. I have created this class to help close this gap. When students know how to spell a word, they can understand it more clearly. Not only do they learn how to correctly say and spell the words, but also they learn the translation in English, so they may apply this to the quality of their movements in class. I also cover the origin of some of the terminology and how it varies from different schools (ex. Cecchetti vs Russian vs French).
