Let's be clear- economics is NOT about money. (Want to talk money? Try "finance" instead...) It's way more interesting, if you ask me, because economist seek to understand and explain the behavior of people as individuals and groups as they seek to meet their needs and satisfy their wants. Economics is a social science that relies on math and data- and having a basic understanding is vital to understanding what motivates people in the past or present. This class is laser focused on introducing you to basic and intermediate concepts and terms and applying these ideas to real world examples. The goal is to provide you with more tools to understand the world we live in. Instead of a book we use news articles (New York Times, Washington Post, Associated Press, NPR, etc) and government reports- to guide our class. Every week we consider basic definitions, indicators that matter today, and underlying information to dive into the ideas and information by engaging the material as a group. Every learner is required to share ideas and discuss the information so this class is ideal for learners who are willing to attend with an open camera and mic (chat is generally disabled). Every learner is an important part of our class community and this class requires full participation. I encourage you to visit my profile to learn more about me and my learner-centered approach to teaching on Outschool. While I always provide topics for learning and discussion note that learners are encouraged to share topics and information for us to explore together. Ready to talk economics? Our schedule is based on current events and questions/interests raised by learners. That said, learners can expect that we will focus on at least one indicator (such as the Consumer Price Index or Unemployment Rate) as well as at least one concept or definition (such as Supply and Demand or Markets). Learners will always leave with links to additional resources- often policies, examples, or other ways to engage the topic until we meet again.
学習到達目標
Learners will be able to understand real-world economic principles and how decisions impact the world.
