This class removes the guesswork, anxiety, and frustration from the writing experience. The tools taught enable students to explore ideas far beyond the formula of the five-paragraph essay. Each essay is paired with a literature book that will be used as it's basis of discussion and instruction. The process for each essay and book is as follows. Invention - Students come to class having already read the assigned literature book. During class, we will discuss the book and complete a literary analysis together. The student will then select decisions made from within the text. They will consider both sides of the decision, choose which side to support, and develop a thesis. Arrangement - The structure of the Essay is taught. Students arrange their thesis and supporting evidence within the outline modeled. Elocution/Style - Next we focus on elements to dress up writing, adding tropes and sentence structure for maximum clarity and emphasis. It also reviews basic punctuation and spelling rules for self-editing. This process repeats with each essay and each book building on the previous essay. Students love this process because it is discussion-based. They have the opportunity to discuss real issues, express their opinions and learn to support their opinion. The process of reading great literature and writing persuasive thesis-driven essays allows students to grapple with ideas outside of their personal experiences. Weeks 1-4, The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe Weeks 5-8, Number the Stars Weeks 9-12, Phantom Tollbooth Weeks 13 -15, Where the Red Fern Grows By the end of this course, your student will have not only developed powerful skills for writing essays but logical thinking skills for life. They will have developed the thinking processes that lead to rational logic and persuasion.

Each book that has been selected for analysis and writing has been pulled from well know booklist and deemed appropriate for this age group. It is highly recommended that parents familiarize themselves with the content of these books.
Sensitive items to watch for:
Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe - Magic, battles, scary animals, sacrificial death of the main character. Additionally we will be discussing this book from a literary perspective and not as an allegory
Number the Stars - Persecution of the Jews during WWII
Where the Red Fern Grows - YA youngboy falls on an ax and dies, Animal death
It is best if students use Google Docs as well so that specific feedback can be given directly into the paper and so parents can easily see feedback.
Please Note that students and/or parents need to know how to upload attachments (PDF or Pictures) and how to use the basic functions of Google Docs. All of these steps will be demonstrated in class for students.
