This on-going course will provide a new art unit each class with art projects targeted for lower elementary students (first and second grade). Each unit will cover a different artist, art movement, and/ or art culture and will teach students how to manipulate various art media, both 2D and 3D, better preparing students for upper elementary art. At the start of each class, students will learn a famous artist, art movement, and/ or art culture. Students will then complete a final project based upon the art history while also learning how to manipulate major art media like drawing, painting, and clay. To complete each artwork, I will demonstrate each step of the project on the screen as students follow along and complete the steps just like they would if they were in an art classroom. Students will hold up their artwork to the screen between steps and/ or when they need extra help completing the step. In addition to modeling each step, I will provide a printable PDF which contains photos of each step as well as written directions. Projects sometimes may be started in class but finished outside of class while other times projects will be finished by the end of class. After completing each project, students will be encouraged to post a photo of their finished project on the class page and will be given a review activity and/ or review questions to answer as well as a sneak peak of the next week's project. Below are the projects that will be completed in this course. A prerecorded, self-paced version of this course is also available in two parts. The weekly breakdown is below: September 16 Rene Magritte portrait- a self-portrait drawing in the style of Magritte’s painting which will serve as the cover of their art portfolio. Needed supplies include white paper, a pencil and eraser, and crayons or colored pencils. September 23 Patterned sunsets- a mixed media 2D design that combine crayon and watercolor paint to make a sunset based on Claud Monet’s Impressionist paintings. Needed supplies include white sketch or mixed media paper, a pencil and eraser, crayons or colored pencils, and watercolor paint with a brush and water cup. September 30 Mosaic medallions- a paper collage based upon the tile mosaics of the Byzantine period. Needed supplies include construction paper of various colors, glue, scissor, a pencil, and an eraser. October 7 & 14- no class, fall break October 21 Clay owls- a ceramic design to each student's clay techniques. Needed supplies include air-dry clay, a container of water, paint and paint supplies, and a spoon, fork, and knife to use as clay tools. October 28 Greek paper vases- a paper drawing focusing on Greek potter and geometric patterns. Needed supplies include red paper, a pencil and an eraser, access to a printer, a ruler, scissors, and a black marker. November 4 Aboriginal art- a painting based on the Aborigine dream work paintings. Needed supplies include acrylic or tempera paint on a palette or plate, q-tips/ cotton swabs, and colored paper. November 11 Eric Carle collage- a collage made out of painted paper to resemble those of Eric Carle. Needed supplies include white sketch or mixed media paper, construction paper, watercolor paint with a brush and water cup, scissors, and glue. November 18 Fruit life drawing- an oil pastel drawing based upon still life paintings of various eras including the Renaissance, the Baroque Period, Impressionism, Post Impressionism, and Modernism. Needed supplies include white paper, a pencil and eraser, a black marker, a ruler, and crayons or colored pencils or oil pastels. November 25 Clay relief sculptures- a 3D clay picture made after learning about the relief sculptures of the Ancient Near East. Needed supplies include air-dry clay, a container of water, paint and paint supplies, and a spoon, fork, and knife to use as clay tools. December 2 Egyptian cartouche- a 2D mixed media design based upon Ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs. Needed supplies include sketch or mixed media paper, access to a printer, a pencil and eraser, a black crayon, and watercolor paint with a paint brush and water cup. An optional supply includes gold paint. December 9 Starry Night cityscape- an oil pastel drawing to make one’s own version of the Starry Night. Needed supplies include white paper and crayons or oil pastels. December 16 Animal faces- an animal face collage/ drawing of animals that live in their area just like the Native American tribes of the Pacific Northwestern regions, the Haida, the Nuxalt, the Kwakwaka'wakw, the Tlingit, the Tsimshia, and the Coast Salish people made totem poles and other art forms of their local animals. Needed supplies include construction paper, scissors, and glue. December 23 & 30- no class, winter break January 6 City in a circle- an introductory linear perspective colored pencil or crayon drawing. Needed supplies include white paper, something with which to trace a circle that will fill up the paper, a pencil and eraser, a ruler, markers, and colored pencils or crayons. January 13 Prehistoric hand print- a drawing of one’s hand print to resemble those found in prehistoric cave drawings. Needed supplies white paper, black or brown paper, scissors, and chalk or oil pastels or crayons. January 20- no class, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day January 27 Paper sculpture- a 3D project using paper made after studying the major types of sculptures. Needed supplies include white paper, construction paper, scissors, and glue. February 3 Op Art illustrations- drawings segmented into strips to create optical illusions like those of the Op Art movement. Needed supplies include white paper, a pencil and eraser, a ruler, and colored markers. February 10 Kandinsky circles- a painting series made to resemble the circle painting of Wassily Kandinsky. Needed supplies include white mixed media or sketch paper, watercolor paint, a paint brush, and a water cup. February 17- no class, President’s Day (U.S.) February 24 Face collages- a paper collage of an animal or human face created after studying and celebrating the art and diversity from the many peoples of Western African from the Sub-Saharan Africa, between the Sahara and the Kalahari Desert. Needed supplies include construction paper, scissors, and glue. March 3 Monster faces- clay sculptures made after studying the history of statues. Needed supplies include air-dry clay, a container of water, paint and paint supplies after the project has dried, and a spoon, fork, and knife to use as clay tools. March 10 Paul Klee fish- oil pastel drawings made to resemble the painting styles of Paul Klee. Needed supplies include white or black paper and oil pastels or crayons. March 17 & 24- no class, spring break March 31 Pop Art hand print- a four-print series of one's hand on bright paper to resemble the famous celebrity prints by Andy Warhol during the Pop Art movement of the 1950s. Needed supplies include construction paper, scissors, glue, a pencil with an eraser, black paint, and a paintbrush. April 7 Ted Harrison landscapes- chalk drawings of landscapes to study contrast. Needed supplies include white or construction paper and oil pastels or crayons. April 14 Paint paper weaving- an abstract painted paper cut into strips to make a paper weave. Needed supplies include white mixed media or sketch paper, construction paper, scissors, glue, watercolor paint, a paint brush, and a water cup. April 21 Chinaware- paper China paints illustrated to resemble the Chinaware traded with Europe during the 1800's. Needed supplies include white paper, something to trace a circle as large as the paper, scissors, a pencil and eraser, a blue marker, and a black marker. April 28 Layered hamburgers- a mixed media collage to learn about texture and layering in composition. Needed supplies include white paper, crayons or colored pencils, scissors, and glue. May 5 Windmills- a paper windmill using the action painting designs of artists like Jackson Pollock. Needed supplies include white mixed media or sketch paper, scissors, a brass fastener, a black crayon, watercolor paint, a paint brush, and a water cup. May 12 Pointillism- a marker drawing made with dots to resemble the pointillism of Georges Seurat. Needed supplies include white paper, a pencil and eraser, and colored markers. May 19 Musician collage- a collage illustration done in Cubist style to mimic the painting of the Three Musicians by Pablo Picasso. Needed supplies include white paper, scissors, glue, construction paper, and crayons or colored pencils. When showing images from art history, no nudity or graphic images will be shown, but the cultural practices and religious beliefs may be discussed. These cultural practices and religious beliefs will be presented from an unbiased viewpoint to show how and why the art was made. The purpose of each type of art will be discussed at age appropriate levels.

If you do not see the week's supply list, please look at the class description under class experience which will list what project is being taught that week along with which supplies are needed. Each project is designed to meet (a) particular art standard(s) for most U.S. states. In addition, for professional development to renew my teaching license and to receive a teaching license when teaching in North Dakota, I took an additional 4-credit college course on Native American studies.
