What is realism? Surrealism? What do two very different poets, Shakespeare and Pablo Neruda, have to teach us about love and reality? In this one hour class, we will read and analyze Shakespeare's Sonnet 130 (My Mistress Eyes are Nothing Like the Sun) and Pablo Neruda's One Hundred Love Sonnets-XVII. Although similar in theme (both sophisticated love poems), these two poems illustrate that despite the same form their poetic philosophies lead to very different results. In this class, students will be introduced to the two poets, learn the terms and importance of realism and surrealism, apply them to the sonnets we will read, and write a realistic/surrealistic poems of their own.
