In this engaging and intellectually rich course, students will master the art of persuasive essay writing using The Lost Tools of Writing—a classical composition curriculum rooted in the tradition of rhetoric. Designed for middle and high school students, this course equips learners with powerful tools to think clearly, organize their thoughts, and communicate persuasively in writing.

Students will explore the three canons of rhetoric—Invention, Arrangement, and Elocution—while learning how to craft compelling arguments based on justice, virtue, and wisdom. Through step-by-step guidance, engaging discussions, and structured practice, writers will learn how to:

Identify and explore issues worth discussing

Generate meaningful ideas using the five common topics

Craft strong thesis statements and counterarguments

Structure essays with clarity and coherence

Use rhetorical devices to enhance style and persuasion

By the end of the course, students will have written several full persuasive essays and developed the confidence and critical thinking skills to engage in thoughtful discourse.

There will be novels to read in this class to be able to use for persuasive essays.  Learners will have 3 weeks to read or listen to each novel before we begin the essay on that novel.  Novels include:
