In this 12-week course, we will go through Little House on the Prairie by Laura Ingalls Wilder. Each class, we will read passages from the chapter for that class and review the chapter. Each student will need to have read the chapter for that week before class. during the review, we will work on reading comprehension by going over a few questions about the story. We will discuss why the characters made certain choices and use our imagination to create what ifs for what could have changed in the story. Each chapter will have an activity that will be done in class. Based on the chapter the activity might include aspects from mathematics, language arts, social studies, or science. Some examples include: creating their family tree, writing a diary entry, creating moon phases with cookies, build a mini house, acting out the story, finding parts of speech, and so many more. Class structure: 5 minutes - Intros 15 minutes - Chapter(s) Review 20 minutes - Activity 5 minutes - Goodbyes Week 1: Day 1 - Chapter 1: Going West and Chapter 2: Crossing the Creek Day 2 - Chapter 3: Camp on the High Prairie and Chapter 4: Prairie Day Week 2: Day 1 - Chapter 5: The House on the Prairie Day 2 - Chapter 6: Moving In and Chapter 7: The Wolf-Pack Week 3: Day 1 - Chapter 8: Two Stout Doors and Chapter 9: A Fire on the Hearth Day 2 - Chapter 10: A Roof and a Floor and Chapter 11: Indians in the House Week 4: Day 1 - Chapter 12: Fresh Water to Drink and Chapter 13: Texas Longhorns Day 2 - Chapter 14: Indian Camp and Chapter 15: Fever 'N' Ague Week 5: Day 1 - Chapter 16: Fire in the Chimney and Chapter 17: Pa Goes to Town Day 2 - Chapter 18: The Tall Indian Week 6: Day 1 - Chapter 19: Mr. Edwards Meets Santa Claus and Chapter 20: A Scream in the Night Day 2 - Chapter 21: Indian Jamboree and Chapter 22: Prairie Fire Week 7: Day 1 - Chapter 23: Indian War Cry and Chapter 24: Indians Ride Away Day 2 - Chapter 25: Soldiers and Chapter 26: Going Out This is recommended for grades 2-4 reading level. Other students are welcome but please let me know if they are outside of this reading level. It is recommended that all students have the book to read in class but it is not required. It can be purchased online, in stores, or checked out at many local libraries.
