Language is all around us, but have you ever wondered how it works? This course takes students on a journey into linguistics, the scientific study of human language. Through engaging activities and thought-provoking discussions, students will uncover the hidden patterns behind the languages we speak. We’ll start by answering the fundamental question: What is linguistics? From there, students will explore the building blocks of language, including the sounds of human speech, the structure of syllables, and the tiny units of meaning that form words. We’ll look at what the world’s 7,000+ languages have in common and what sets them apart, uncovering how new words are created and why some languages order words differently than others. Students will also investigate how we use language to connect the world around us to our minds, exploring questions like: How does context influence meaning? Why does meaning shift when the context changes? Along the way, they’ll gain insights into how language reflects and shapes human thought and culture. This course encourages students to think critically, develop curiosity about the world’s linguistic diversity, and engage in creative problem-solving to understand the underlying rules of language. By the end, students will have a deeper appreciation for the complexity of language and the ways it connects us as humans. Whether you’re a word nerd, a science enthusiast, or just curious about how language works, this course is your first step into the wonderful world of linguistics! The class is structured around interactive, theme-based units and lessons that build progressively to deepen students' understanding of language. Each lesson focuses on one major question, such as "What are the sounds of human language?" or "How does context contribute to meaning?" I use a mix of teaching methods designed to engage learners of different styles: I’ll introduce key concepts using slides, visual aids, and examples to ensure the material is accessible and engaging. Short video clips, animations, or audio recordings will provide real-world examples of linguistic phenomena. My teaching style is highly interactive and student-centered. I aim to spark curiosity and empower students to explore and discover concepts for themselves. I combine clear explanations with opportunities for socratic learning and creative problem-solving. I encourage questions and discussions, creating a supportive environment where students feel confident sharing their ideas. I strive to connect abstract concepts to students’ own experiences with language, making the content relevant and meaningful. During lectures, I’ll frequently pause for questions or to clarify concepts. I’ll facilitate discussions to ensure everyone has a chance to share their thoughts and ask questions, so the class is highly interactive, with opportunities to connect directly with me and classmates throughout every session.
