*For late joiners of the current running class, we will be starting our next book, Pet by Akweake Emezi the week of June 8th.*

Note: Feel free to jump in at any time! It's super easy to catch up and fit right in. Along with reading aloud approximately 2 chapters per class, I also record myself reading most chapters. These recordings are uploaded to a private YouTube link shared in the classroom. 🎧 Your learner can pop on some headphones and listen any time they'd like to catch up with class! 😊📖

🌈 Hi all! 🌈
Welcome to our Social Book Club, where we focus on exploring Transgender and Gender Non-Conforming characters! ✨ This is a Read-To-Me Class, so I'll be reading aloud to the students for about 2/3rds of the class while they follow along in their own books 📚. This class takes place twice per week to keep everyone engaged and on task (Plus, it's always fun to see each other twice a week! 😄).

This is a chill, easy-going class with NO reading homework, and some time for discussions. No pressure to speak up if you're feeling shy – everyone is welcome here! 🤗

A typical class goes like this: 🕒
First 5-10 minutes: I’ll invite everyone into the classroom and check in to see how everyone’s doing. We'll usually chat about life and share some things we have been up to! (Sometimes we get weirdly in off-topic conversations for a bit. lol) Then we’ll turn to our new chapter. I’ll start reading to the class, and they can follow along in their own books 📖... or they can quietly color or draw while listening 🎨. They are also always asked at the beginning of the class whether they themselves would like to read any in the class. Most students say no, but everyyyyy once in a while, I'll get someone that's feeling a bit more confident and happy to read. 🥹☺️ (Very cool moment.)

About 30 minutes of reading: We’ll finish the chapter if we can, and then we’ll discuss our thoughts on what we just read 📖💬. Afterward, I’ll give everyonefree time to just chat. I believe in allowing students to speak to each other and have a good time🗣️, so we'll have time before/after reading to share and chat about things that aren’t necessarily book-related. Sometimes, students stay a bit later if they want to chat more, and that's totally fine with me if my schedule allows! 😊

Important Info:
Parental Responsibility: Parents are encouraged to do their own research on the books we’ll explore in class. Everyone has different ideas about what's appropriate for their children. I’ll list the books we’re covering, a short description, and the suggested reading age. 📚 Please check them out before class!

Book Responsibility: Students are responsible for obtaining their own copy of the books. But don’t worry – it’s okay if your child doesn’t have the book before class! 😊

🚨 PARENTAL GUIDANCE 🚨
Please read the Parental Guidance section of this listing. Thanks! 🙏

📚 Books We May Cover (these may change depending on student maturity/availability) 📚: Teacher will send out supply list for students during the first week of class (or sooner).

1. Parrotfish by Ellen Wittlinger
Reading Age: 13+ years 🏳️‍🌈
Angela Katz-McNair has never felt quite right as a girl. But it’s a shock to everyone when she cuts her hair short, buys men’s clothes, and announces she’d like to be called Grady. Grady is happy with his decision to finally be true to himself, but not everyone is accepting. Will Grady find support and friends despite the struggles?

2. Almost Perfect by Brian Katcher
Reading Age: 15+ years 🌟

*This book has sexual content that may make some readers uncomfortable. There are also slurs used in the book, and some violence. Not for sensitive transgender individuals!*

Logan Witherspoon befriends Sage Hendricks and falls in love with her, only to learn she was born a boy. Can their relationship survive Logan's anger and confusion? This is a heartfelt story about trust, forgiveness, and love. 💖

3. Felix Ever After by Kacen Callender
Reading Age: 15+ years 🌈
Felix Love has never been in love. He’s black, queer, and transgender, and wonders if he’ll ever find his happily-ever-after. When an anonymous person posts Felix’s deadname, Felix is left to navigate revenge, self-love, and a new love triangle. 💘

4. I Am J by Cris Beam
Reading Age: 15+ years 🏳️‍⚧️
J had always felt different. He knew he was a boy, even though he was born a girl. As he grows, J must face his fears, stop hiding, and finally embrace who he truly is. Can he find acceptance, or will he remain invisible forever? 💪

5. Pet by Akwaeke Emezi— 13+
In the near-future utopia of Lucille, where monsters are believed to be eradicated, Jam and her best friend Redemption discover that something is still lurking in the shadows. Jam accidentally summons a creature, Pet, from one of her mother's paintings, and Pet reveals that it is here to hunt a monster living in Redemption's house. The story explores themes of justice, identity, and what it means to confront darkness when society denies its existence.
A powerful & imaginative story about truth, justice, & finding your voice.

Looking forward to reading with all of you! Let me know if you have any questions or need more info! 📚😊

Parents are responsible for vetting books for their children. As this is a YA book club centered around LGBTQIA+ characters, there WILL be some very hard topics, such as sexual references/violence, racism, sexism, mental health, suicide ideation, etc in some or all of these books. The language can sometimes be very explicit. Your student may occasionally experience uncomfortable feelings. I will do my very best to handle these difficult topics in age-appropriate ways that encourage your learner’s understanding in an inclusive and supportive manner. If a student is ever having trouble in class with a topic, I will remove the student from the classroom and place them in a break out room where I can discuss the topic at hand personally with your learner. I will NEVER force a student to sit through any triggering topics, and will always reach out to the parent with any concerns surrounding your child. I am a mother of three teenagers myself. I would expect the same to be done for my kiddos. As this is a read-aloud class, I myself will be reading these things to the student. I will "bleep out" what I can while reading as long as it doesn't change the context of the book as written. I encourage your learners to wear headphones in class so as not to offend other house hold members, or be in listening distance to younger learners.

As the mother of a gay, transgender son, I know the difficulties teens face when navigating their middle school and high school years. I am an LGBTQIA+ advocate and I love reading. I think it's important to read to your children from a very young age (I read nightly to my preschooler!), and it's just as important to read to teenagers (I read daily to my teenagers!). You can give emphasis to certain phrases/subjects, and explain things when they are struggling to understand what's happening in the book, in real-time. It makes the experience much more enjoyable for them, and creates a safe space for them to just sit back and enjoy the story. I hope to see you in class.
