This hands-on class explores the a decomposition chemical reaction using the electrolysis of water. I am a middle school and high school math and science teacher with nine years of experience. Additionally, I am a homeschooling dad of 12+years who has four kids that are four different types of learners. I have the privilege to teach many subject areas, but chemistry is my favorite as it applies to all other areas of science. My opinion is that if a student understands major chemical concepts, other sciences become more clear. I hold a MS and BS in the natural sciences.
1- 2 or 3 cup food plastic storage container - don't buy a new one, use what you have (example picture:https://tinyurl.com/yat484af) 3-4 rubber bands (~3 inches in size) 1-roll of electrical tape 2- Standard school pencils (not mechanical) sharpened at both ends of each pencil. Water 16-24 oz Piece of cardboard (~6" X 6") 3-4 T of baking soda 1- 9 volt battery Copper wire options. Choose ONE of the following sets: - two alligator clipped wires (see link: https://tinyurl.com/y82qgvqj) - two copper wires with ends exposed - two 9-volt terminal (see this link https://tinyurl.com/y73jv33u) Optional: 2- small test tubes.
