週1時間. Each week, we focus on a different element. Learners will likely have a bit of homework after weeks 1-3, as they use their creativity to plan out one specific element of their story. Following the class on Week 4, learners should expect to spend a minimum of 1-hour putting together the elements of their fairy tale into a completed story which will be presented during Week 5.

In this 4-week course, we will explore the important elements included in fairy tales and each learner will write their own fairy tale by the end of the course! It will be a fun, magical time of exploring the common elements of fairy tales (what makes them unique), while also developing our own fairy tales!

My teaching style is very interactive, as I believe learners should have fun and not have to sit through a lecture (especially at this age). At the start of each class, I will present some background on one fairy tale element, then I will ask learners for their input on how this element is expressed in common fairytales that most learners will have seen/heard/read at some point previously. Several examples will be used, so if a learner is unfamiliar with one fairy tale, they will likely be familiar with another example used. (If not, it will be something fun they can go read after class!) After we have explored this element in depth, learners will choose how this particular element will be incorporated into their own story!

Each week, we focus on a different element. Learners will likely have a bit of work to complete independently after the first and second class, as they use their creativity to plan out two specific elements of their story. Following the 3rd class, learners should expect to spend a minimum of 1-hour putting together the elements of their fairy tale into a completed story which will be presented during the final class, in week 4. Learners may also choose to create a diorama or story board to help their presentation come to life, and this will take some prep time as well. It will be up to the individual learner how long each step of this process takes, depending upon how fast they write and how much detail they choose to add to their fabulous fairytale!

The final day of class will be a really fun celebration where learners will present their fairy tale to the class! They will be allowed to use their creativity in how they present, from simply reading their story, to illustrating their story, to creating a diorama of their story!

SCHEDULE:

✨Week 1: Character Development + Setting
Every fairy tale has a hero/heroine and a villain! We will discuss what this looks like in a variety of fairy tales, then learners will choose who the hero/heroine and villain will be in their story, along with their other main characters.

Additionally, we will discuss settings this week. After looking at examples of settings in a variety of fairy tales, learners will choose the setting for their own fairy tale!

✨Week 2: Problem / Solution + Universal Lesson / Universal Truth
Fairy tales are centered around a problem + finding a solution to the problem. We will discuss the problems and solutions in a variety of fairy tales, then learners will decide what will be the problem + solution in their own story!

Additionally, fairy tales generally feature a universal lesson or universal truth. We will discuss what this means and look at examples of this. Then, learners will decide what lesson they would like to incorporate into their fairy tale!

✨Week 3: Magic / Supernatural Elements + Presentation Options
You can't have a fairy tale without magic! We will discuss what how magic and supernatural elements are used in various different fairy tales. Then, learners will choose what types of magic and/or supernatural elements they will incorporate into their own fairy tale!

Finally, we will discuss options for how fairy tales may be presented the final week of class and set expectations for how these presentations will work. Learners will have total freedom in how they choose to present their fairy tale! This discussion will be to share ideas and answer any lingering questions so students are equipped to complete their preparations before the final class!

✨Week 4: Share Your Story!
During this final class, students will present their fairy tales to the rest of the class! Most students will choose to read their fairy tale out loud to the class. However, if a learner is shy about reading in front of others, they may send their fairy tale to Ms. Price ahead of time and she can read it for them so they still get to share their work with their peers! This class may run long, if we have a full class! I am not able to increase the length of one specific class session on Outschool, but I will block off time on my personal calendar to make sure all learners have time to share and are not rushed!

EXPERIENCE NEEDED: Learners DO need to be able to confidently put their thoughts on paper, as they will be writing their story independently. We will be focusing on the elements of a fairy tale, NOT how to form sentences or paragraphs. That being said, learners do NOT need to have mastered excellent spelling, grammar, or punctuation. As long as they are able to get their thoughts on paper in a way that they can read what they have written (generally, as long as they can spell phonetically), then they will be able to enjoy this class! Alternatively, if you have a child at the younger age of the age range for this class who you believe would LOVE the class but would need parental support to be successful in actually creating their own fairy tale, you are welcome to enroll your learner in the class and help them with the writing portion, most of which will be done outside of class.

その他の情報

保護者へのお知らせ
Due to the age of learners in this class, we will NOT get into the dark Brothers Grimm history of fairy tales. We will look at the more commonly known kid-friendly versions.
受講に必要なもの
Learners will need a pen or pencil and paper for each class. Markers, crayons, or colored pencils may also be beneficial if your learner likes to plan by drawing out pictures! Ms. Price will provide graphic organizers that can be printed out ahead of time. However, if a family does not have access to a printer, students can easily do the same work on a blank piece of paper!
