In this 4-week class, students will explore the connections among language, politics, and everyday life, focusing on topics such as the societal perspectives on language (as a problem, right, or resource), the role of English in the U.S., minority language perspectives, assimilation, pluralism, and strategies for navigating cultural and linguistic diversity in civic engagement. The course is structured with three weekly lessons, offering opportunities for application through the analysis of historical and contemporary newspaper articles. My teaching style is interactive and engaging, incorporating a mix of lectures, discussion-based activities, and media analysis to bring theory into real-world contexts. Students will have opportunities to interact with me and others directly during class, through open discussions during class, fostering a supportive environment for deeper learning and practical application.
