"Kickoff to Kwanzaa - Learning Culture and History Through Craft and Music" is a one-time, 45-minute session that provides an overview of the history of Kwanzaa, its connection to African and African American culture, and the ways this holiday is celebrated globally today. I have celebrated Kwanzaa with my family since the 90s. I have helped curate Kwanzaa celebrations in Virginia and performed at various celebrations. As a person of African American descent and an African American literary and historical scholar, I bring a wealth of experience and expertise to this subject.
A copy of the craft sheet will be provided prior to class. Learners should cut out all parts prior to class and bring with them a glue stick to "light" the candles. Learners will also need a piece of construction paper on which to glue their kinara. All learners will also receive a handout with the seven principles outlined for reference during and after the class.
