This ongoing class is designed with the horse-loving student in mind. Small group lessons will focus on a different horse-themed book every week. The lessons are designed to encourage discussion regarding characters, setting and plot every week. In addition, there will also be an additional literacy focus every week (see the scope and sequence below for the first two months' special subject areas). Lessons will be divided as follows: 1. The first five minutes will be spent bonding as a class. Each learner will be able to share something important to them before instruction begins, thereby ensuring each learner feeling a sense of belonging. 2. The next half hour will be spent reviewing characters, setting and plot. Learners will be encouraged (but not expected) to participate with their own ideas regarding main versus minor characters and setting places as well as the climax of each story. 3. The rest of each class will be discussing that week's literary focus. This area of interest will vary from week-to-week depending upon the book read and the class needs. As before, students will be encourage to participate and attention will be equally shared among all students. I realize that more reserved students may be less inclined to offer ideas and opinions, and I will encourage a shared learning experience for all. Each class will encourage team work, bonding and communication among all learners; therefore, soft skills such as patience and active listening will be a by-product as well as literacy skill development. The scope and sequence will be as follows: Week of June 9 Misty of Chincoteague - Marguerite Henry Characters, Setting, Plot Setting Development Week of June 16 Wild Girl - Patricia Reilly Griff Characters, Setting, Plot Setting Relevance Week of June 23 Horse Girl - Carrie Seim Characters, Setting, Plot Character Development Week of June 30 Blackjack: Dreaming of a Morgan Horse Series - Ellen F Feld Characters, Setting, Plot Antagonist, Protagonist Round, Flat Characters Week of July 7 The Dust Bowl: American Horse Tales - Michelle Jabes Corpora Characters, Setting, Plot Plot Development - Exposition, Rising Action, Climax Week of July 14 Lizzie Flying Solo - Nanci Turner Steveson Characters, Setting, Plot Plot Development - Climax, Falling Action, Resolution Week of July 21 Riding Lessons - Jane Smiley Characters, Setting, Plot Inference Week of July 28 Trouble Blows West: Ginne West Adventure - Monique Bucheger Characters, Setting, Plot Theme Week of August 4 King of the Wind - Marguerite Henry Characters, Setting, Plot Hook
