Learners will not only learn stories of their families, but also an appreciation for those stories and a desire to learn more.
I have an associate's degree in Family History Research, and I have been involved in family history for six years. I am the oldest of ten children, and my youngest siblings used to fight over who could sit on my lap to do family history with me.
It is highly recommended that learners have a way to record stories; any medium will do. It is recommended but not required that learners have a FamilySearch account prior to taking this class. Some of the FamilySearch Discovery activities in this class will be more meaningful if the learner is able to log into FamilySearch. Parental support may make this class more meaningful to learners. Many of the required homework assignments require asking a relative to share stories; it is recommended that the parent(s) help the learners identify a relative to contact. The homework for the last lesson is to enjoy a meal with the family that either has been passed down through generations or represents the family's heritage. This can be done by preparing a meal or by eating out, whichever fits the family's lifestyle better. Many of the optional homework assignments are activities to do together as a family.
https://www.familysearch.org/discovery/activities/ Many of the FamilySearch Discovery activities do not require a FamilySearch account. However, many of these activities may be more meaningful with an account. Children ages 8-12 can have a FamilySearch account with their parents' permission.
I was introduced to family history through a mission with my church, where I served in FamilySearch. This inspired me to seek a career in genealogy. I graduated BYU-Idaho with an associate's degree in 2018. I joined the Association of Professional...
