I built this class because I think it is vital to feel confident in your ability to figure out the truth about issues that are important to you. I have seen people struggle to find news sources they trust or to see through the bias in the news platforms they're comfortable with. All news presents a bias because all authors bring their own culture and experiences to the page when they write. There's no way around it. I am a licensed social studies teacher and former debate coach. In college as an undergraduate research fellow and an honors student, I was forced to research constantly and was presented with multiple methods and frameworks for doing research which I have drawn upon in teaching this class.

The example that I use to model this process for the class is learning about the Supreme Court's decision to overturn Roe v. Wade. That means that I will be reading and talking about articles dealing with abortion in this class. Students will be asked to find and read news articles as part of their homework for this class. That will require them to search the internet and explore different news sources.
