Although we won’t be meeting live, there will be plenty of student-teacher interaction. Students will also have the opportunity to get to know each other, comment on each other’s posts, share stories, and submit pictures/videos to the outschool classroom. No deadlines. I will post lessons twice a week and check in daily. We will be watching videos, doing optional DIY activities, answering group discussion questions, and completing worksheets and games once a week for 5 weeks. WEEK 1: - Watch video lessons: • Introduction to Weather Weather tells us what the sky and air around us are like on any given day. The weather can be sunny, cloudy, windy, rainy, stormy or snowing. Scientists can predict the weather by understanding patterns. - DIY activity: Rain gauge • Weather vs climate Weather is the day-to-day variation of the atmosphere’s condition locally. Climate is the year-by-year variation of the atmosphere’s condition over a large area. Scientists record weather patterns across different times and areas to make predictions. - Complete worksheet - Answer group discussion questions - Play a game on kahoot - DIY activity: Wind vane WEEK 2: Watch lesson videos: • Extreme weather solutions Extreme weather is the result of natural processes. We can’t eliminate these hazards but we can reduce their impact. Engineers develop solutions to protect us from extreme weather. - Complete worksheet - Group discussion - Play a game on kahoot - DIY activity: Air conditioner WEEK 3: - Watch video lessons: • Air masses and weather fronts An air mass is a large body of air with roughly the same temperature and humidity. Air masses take on the characteristics of the regions they form in. The interaction of air masses can cause major changes in weather. - Group discussion - Kahoot game - Worksheet - DIY activity: Warm air rises WEEK 4: - Watch video lesson: • Natural disasters Earthquakes, tsunamis and volcanoes are a result of natural processes. Earthquakes and volcanoes occur in patterns on Earth’s surface. They are mainly found along the boundaries between oceans and continents. Humans cannot eliminate these hazards, but we can take steps to reduce their impact. - Group discussion - Kahoot game - Worksheet - DIY activity: Seismograph WEEK 5: - Watch video lesson: • Predicting natural disasters We can't stop natural disasters from happening, but we can reduce their impact. Some disasters like tornadoes can be forecasted to give people warning. Other natural disasters like earthquakes are not yet predictable. - Group discussion - Kahoot game - Worksheet - DIY activity: Make an emergency kit
