The purpose of this course is to provide an introduction to music history from the medieval period where we will discuss the development of notation, polyphony modal theory, musical forms, composers, musical works, and cultural history. The following is a weekly schedule of what will be covered. Learners will be expected to keep a listening journal to record their thoughts on the pieces learned in class. Week 1Lesson 1DISCOVERING THE MUSIC OF MESOPOTAMIAThere will be classroom introductions where students will answer the following question: What is Music History? There will also be an overview about Music in Antiquity: Music in Mesopotamia.Week 2Lesson 2𝐌𝐔𝐒𝐈𝐂 𝐈𝐍 𝐀𝐍𝐓𝐈𝐐𝐔𝐈𝐓𝐘: 𝐆𝐑𝐄𝐄𝐂𝐄 𝐀𝐍𝐃 𝐑𝐎𝐌𝐄Learners will be introduced to chant notation and theory: Neumes, Modes, and Hexachords. They will also learn about how Greece and Rome played an important role in the development of Western Music Theory.Week 3Lesson 3𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐒𝐂𝐑𝐈𝐏𝐓𝐎𝐑𝐔𝐌: 𝐌𝐔𝐒𝐈𝐂 𝐌𝐀𝐍𝐔𝐒𝐂𝐑𝐈𝐏𝐓𝐒Learners will be introduced to musical forms and historical information about Roman Liturgy and Chant: Offices and Mass; Genres and Forms of Chant. An assignment will be provided by the instructor of the course that will involve transcribing Greek notation.Week 4Lesson 4𝐑𝐎𝐌𝐀𝐍 𝐋𝐈𝐓𝐔𝐑𝐆𝐘 𝐀𝐍𝐃 𝐂𝐇𝐀𝐍𝐓Learners will be introduced to Medieval Secular Music: Troubadours and Trouvères, Cantigas and Estampies. There will be an assignment provided by the instructor where learners will develop their own codex.Week 5Lesson 5𝐄𝐀𝐑𝐋𝐘 𝐏𝐎𝐋𝐘𝐏𝐇𝐎𝐍𝐘: 𝐎𝐑𝐆𝐀𝐍𝐔𝐌; 𝐌𝐎𝐃𝐀𝐋 𝐍𝐎𝐓𝐀𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍Learners will develop their knowledge about early polyphony and Nôtre-Dame Polyphony. There will be a listening assignment where the students will describe their thoughts on Medieval music.Week 6Lesson 6𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐀𝐑𝐒 𝐍𝐎𝐕𝐀For this session, learners will continue our discussion about early polyphony. In addition, learners will be introduced to the Ars Nova and its origins. The final project will be introduced to learners in the final part of the class.Week 7Lesson 7𝐅𝐈𝐍𝐀𝐋 𝐏𝐑𝐎𝐉𝐄𝐂𝐓𝐒There will be a final project where students will present a composer discussed from this class and a comprehensive review of what had learned in class.
