This four week course is designed to give students a broad overview of environmental science and its many sub fields. Students will build a context within which to understand subjects such as ecosystem function, biodiversity, conservation, and human impact. While this class touches on some potentially emotionally charged subjects, such as climate change and habitat destruction, it maintains a positive and hopeful tone. We will first explore the foundations of ecology, then move into human interactions with our natural systems, examining both the positive and negative sides, and conclude by looking at many current and future possible solutions. Classes are designed to encourage student engagement and follow their curiosity. Week One: - What is the environment - Understanding systems - Connections - Cycles - Flows - Feedback Week Two: - Biomes - Biodiversity - Evolution - Species interactions - Biological communities - Human ecology Week Three: - Environmental toxicology - Pollution - Ecosystem destruction - Climate change Week Four: - Conservation - Restoration - Regenerative agriculture - Policy and sustainability

Hello! My name is Arwen, and I am absolutely passionate about space science, the environment, and teaching! I offer courses about the solar system, planets, natural processes, soil, and the environment. I am a NASA Solar System Ambassador and science author. My Master's is in Space Science, and I have undergraduate degrees in Agricultural Ecology, and Natural Resource Management. I am currently working on a doctorate in STEM education.
I believe curiosity and learning are human instincts. I try to honor that by asking the learners lots of questions and encouraging them to think about information in new ways.
When not teaching, you can find me hosting "Found in Space: A Science Podcast for Kids and Teens" or playing Dungeons and Dragons and exploring the Southwest with my three homeschooled kiddos and our big, fluffy orange cat named Moose!
