Prior experience is required. Students need to have played the saxophone for a minimum of 6 months and/or completed the Essential Elements Book 1. Beginning in the Essential Elements Book 2, we will begin average 2 pages per lesson and there will be required homework each class. I will begin each lesson with review of what was taught the previous week and expect students to demonstrate an understanding of the assigned and practiced exercise(s). Week 1- page 2, 3 review notes, dotted half and dotted quarter notes, as well as dotted eighth notes, dynamics and first/second endings. Homework: exercise #7 and #9 Week 2- warm up #7 together, then #9 as individuals. Page 4 & 5 introduce multiple measure rest, staccato, and tenuto. Practice exercises #17 & 19 Week 3- warm up #17 together, then #19 as individuals. Page 6 & 7 introduce ritardando, new note high B and key changes. Practice exercises #29 and sight read #31. Week 4- warm up #29 together, then #31 as individuals. Pages 8 & 9 introduce cut time, syncopation. Review dynamics. Homework: #42 and 43
I have 30+ years experience playing saxophone. I have been in concert band, marching band and jazz bands. I currently play in the orchestra at my church, and have done so for the past 11 years. I have been giving lessons on Outschool since August 2020, and enjoy watching the excitement with each new learner as he/she begins on this incredible musical journey!
