This course can be taken in preparation, as review, or in tandem with other high school writing classes.* The goal of this course is to help learners acquire hands-on knowledge of grammar basics while applying these to their own writing. By learning the "why" behind rules (such as comma placement), learners will increase their confidence and skill level while learning to avoid common errors. Class time will involve 25-30 minutes of instruction and 20-25 minutes of practice. The course schedule is as follows: Class 1: Understanding parts of speech and functions Class 2: Identifying sentence patterns Class 3: Avoiding fragments and run-ons Class 4: Additional common comma uses Class 5: Subject-verb & pronoun-antecedent agreement Class 6: Point of view: 1st, 2nd, & 3rd Person This class is interactive by nature and all learners will be expected to participate by answering when called upon. Learners will also be expected to work together with their classmates for specific in-class assignments. Learners will be given multiple opportunities within each class to ask questions, verbally and/or in the chat. Note that this class does have homework assignments and that it is important for learners to do these in a timely manner (due the day before the next class unless otherwise specified) in order to maximize their learning and demonstrate that they are grasping and applying concepts well. All assignments will be graded and returned prior to the next week's class. If homework assignments are received AFTER the due date, they will NOT be graded, so it is very important for learners to submit their work on time (or early!). *If your learner is currently taking a college preparation writing course with Ms. Molly McGill, you may be eligible for a discount. Please inquire with Ms. McGill.

I teach English writing, grammar, and test prep; English as a second/foreign language; poetry; and introductory Brazilian Portuguese classes. I have a B.A. in Secondary English Education and an M.A. in Missions and Intercultural Studies along with a graduate-level certificate in Teaching English as a Second/Foreign Language. With over 25 years of experience working with children, youth, and adults to help them achieve improved communicative and comprehension skills, I believe that everyone can learn and improve and that each person is uniquely wired to learn. It is my privilege to come alongside and to help, engage, challenge, and motivate all learners to be their best and do their best.
Personally, I enjoy reading, writing, spending time in God's Word, and hanging out with my family. We love hosting Brazilian-style cook-outs at our home and entertaining guests locally and from around the world.
