IEW Introduction Using Aesop's Fables: Syllabus Course Description: This course is designed as an introduction to the first two units of IEW Writing for younger children. Using Aesop's fables, we will learn to outline, write from outlines, and make story sequence charts to write our own stories. We will also incorporate dress-ups and decorations to make our writing more interesting. Required Materials: • Aesop's Fables • 3-ring binder • Paper and writing utensils Course Structure: Each week, students will: • Read a selected Aesop's fable • Practice outlining the fable • Write from outlines • Learn and apply dress-ups and decorations to their writing Weekly Breakdown: Week 1 - Unit 1: Outlining • Introduction to outlining using Aesop's fables: The Bear and the Bees, The Young Crab and his Mother • Practice outlining a selected fable Week 2 - Unit 1: Outlining • Continue practicing outlining with another fable: The Boy and the Filberts, The Dog in the Manger, The Cat and the Birds • Review and refine outlining skills Week 3 - Unit 2: Writing from Outlines, -ly Adverb and Strong Verbs • Introduction to writing from outlines: • Incorporate -ly adverbs and strong verbs into writing Week 4 - Unit 2: Writing from Outlines • Fable: The Dog and the Hides • Continue writing from outlines • Practice using -ly adverbs and strong verbs Week 5 - Unit 2: Writing from Outlines, Quality Adjective, Who/Which Clause • Fable: The Dog and the Oysters • Introduction to quality adjectives and who/which clauses • Incorporate these dress-ups into writing Week 6 - Unit 2: Writing from Outlines, Alliteration • Fable: The Peacock and the Crane • Introduction to alliteration • Incorporate alliteration into writing Week 7 - Unit 2: Writing from Outlines, Simile • Fable: The Dog and His Master’s Dinner • Introduction to similes • Incorporate similes into writing Week 8 - Sharing Day • Students will share their best pieces of writing from the course • Celebrate achievements and provide feedback Homework: • Homework assignments will be given each week, focusing on outlining and writing from outlines. • Students should complete assignments and bring them to class each week for review and feedback. ________________________________________ This syllabus provides a structured yet engaging approach to developing foundational writing skills through the IEW method, ensuring young students remain motivated and interested through the timeless and engaging themes of Aesop's fables.
