このクラスで学べること

“Slow and steady wins the race.”

“Do not count your chickens before they hatch.”

“No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted.”

Have you heard these sayings before? Then, you are familiar with Aesop’s Fables! There are so many more stories packed with wisdom and fun talking animals. Join our class as we explore them together and make connections to our own lives.

I developed the Idea Weaver Series as a class inspired by 20th century educator Charlotte Mason's method of short, varied lessons. She discovered that when students made connections between a variety of subjects with high interest levels, their minds were activated to form new ideas and deep connections. In each class, we will explore music, art, and literature. Our assessment will include a time for narrations (oral compositions) from learners where they can share a drawing, use action figures to act out, or simply tell back what they heard. All levels of readers and writers are welcomed!

Example Class Schedule: Each week, we will listen to new music (alternate artwork) and read new stories.

(5 Min)- Welcome, Know & Tell: Share about a time you helped someone.
(15 Min)- Composer Study: Introduce, listen to and discuss Camille Saint-Saens’ Royal March of the Lion (watch brief video clip of orchestra performance). Students will describe how Saint-Saens uses instruments to depict the animals.
(25 Min)- Read and Narrate Aesop’s Fables: "The Lion and the Mouse" and "The Fox and the Grapes"- After reading the story, students will be able to tell back what they heard within the story. They may share a drawing, act out their favorite part or simply tell back in their own words. This is a student led discussion. I am always amazed by the unique points of view students bring to the conversation!
(5 Min)- Farewell, Poetry: “The Brown Bear” by Mary Austin.

Upcoming Classes:

Week 6/28: Fables: "The Lion and the Mouse" and "The Fox and the Grapes"
Week 7/5: Fables: "The Shepherd Boy and the Wolf" and "The Fighting Roosters and the Eagle"
Week 7/12: Fables: "The Country Mouse and the Town Mouse" and "The Crow and the Pitcher"
Week 7/19: No Class
Week 7/26: Fables: "Belling the Cat" and "The Traveler and the Purse"

Hello! My name is Julia. I’m an experienced and certified, middle school and high school ELA teacher with 15 years experience in brick and mortar and online in both public and private settings, serving students locally and internationally. My path in education has led me to my favorite teaching role as a homeschool mom where I love to build curriculum, specific to my childrens’ needs, and help out in my local community co-op.

I hold a Bachelor’s degree in English and Secondary Education and over the years, I’ve had the privilege of teaching a wide variety of learners including English Language Learners and students at AP and honor’s level. As a homeschooling parent I’ve had the chance to see the unique challenges and opportunities of homeschooling, and this has helped me to develop a more holistic approach to teaching.

Here on Outschool, I teach literature classes at the middle and high school level (full curriculum writing classes will begin in Fall 2023). I build dynamic classes that are rigorous and engaging but can be differentiated for individual students’ needs. Each class offers a variety of optional ancillary materials for supporting students' understanding that can be tailored to your learner, but at the heart of each course is the connection students make with our novels, each other and the world around them.

My hobbies include spending time with my family in the great outdoors, learning new skills like knitting and baking bread, and hanging out with friends at coffee shops to discuss great books.

I look forward to meeting you in one of my literature classes. If you have any questions or have a special request for a class, I’d love to hear from you.
