What will be taught?
This course explores the true events that inspired I Survived the Shark Attacks of 1916 by Lauren Tarshis. Students will build their reading comprehension skills, engage in age-appropriate critical and philosophical thinking, and learn about the historical shark attacks that occurred in New Jersey in a thoughtful, respectful, and developmentally appropriate way. We will also explore the science of sharks, early 20th-century American life, and the power of courage and community.

What topics will you cover?
The historical shark attacks of 1916 and their cultural impact
Early 1900s American life and medical understanding
Themes of bravery, friendship, and survival
Character development, plot structure, and point of view
Cause and effect, decision-making, and natural fear responses
Age-appropriate philosophical questions like:
“What does it mean to be brave?”
“When should we trust our instincts over what others say?”
Reading comprehension strategies tailored to diverse learning styles and reading levels
How is your class structured?
The course is structured as a live, interactive class. Each session includes a mix of:

Guided reading and open discussion
Historical and scientific context lessons
Group reflection and critical thinking prompts
Creative responses through writing, drawing, or storytelling
Built-in flexibility to support various learning needs
How will you teach?
I use a natural, conversational teaching style that encourages curiosity, discussion, and creativity. I meet each learner where they are, adapting content to different reading levels and learning styles. Visual, auditory, and kinesthetic methods are integrated to ensure all students feel engaged and successful.

What’s your teaching style?
My style is warm, supportive, and inquiry-based. With 20 years of experience as a pediatric developmental psychologist, I create a trauma-informed and nurturing space where children feel comfortable expressing themselves, exploring big ideas, and making connections to their own lives.

How much will learners get to interact with you?
Students will have frequent, meaningful interaction with me through:

Live group discussions during each session
Breakout groups and individual check-ins
Games and movement-based learning when possible

I am a pediatric developmental psychologist with over 20 years of experience supporting children’s emotional, cognitive, and social development. My work has focused on helping children process complex ideas and emotions in age-appropriate, compassionate ways. I also hold additional credentials as a naturopathic doctor and licensed social worker, further informing my whole-child, trauma-informed teaching approach.

I have been teaching I Survived: Classroom Series as part of an in-person co-op learning program for elementary and middle school-aged students. In this setting, I’ve guided learners through thoughtful discussions about 9/11, using the book to build resilience, empathy, and historical understanding in a developmentally appropriate way.

Over the past two decades, I’ve worked with children in clinical, educational, and therapeutic environments, including schools, homeschool communities, private practice, and family support programs. My approach emphasizes connection, curiosity, and creating a safe space for all learners—especially when exploring sensitive historical events.
