What will be taught?
This course explores the historical events surrounding the sinking of the Titanic through the lens of I Survived the Sinking of the Titanic, 1912 by Lauren Tarshis. Students will strengthen their reading comprehension skills, engage in age-appropriate critical and philosophical thinking, and gain a deeper understanding of this significant historical tragedy in a thoughtful, respectful, and developmentally appropriate way.

What topics will you cover?
The main events of the Titanic disaster and its historical context
Early 20th-century life and maritime travel
Themes of bravery, curiosity, and survival
Character development, plot structure, and narrative voice
Critical thinking about cause and effect, decision-making, and responsibility
Age-appropriate philosophical questions such as:
“What does it mean to be brave in the face of danger?”
“How do we know who to trust in an emergency?”
Reading comprehension strategies tailored to different learning styles and reading levels
How is your class structured?
This course is designed as a live, interactive learning experience. Each session includes a variety of activities such as:

Guided reading and open-ended discussion
Short lessons on historical and scientific background
Group activities and reflection prompts
Creative response projects like drawing, journaling, and storytelling
Built-in flexibility to support students who need more help or enrichment
How will you teach?
I use a conversational, student-centered teaching style that encourages curiosity and exploration. With 20 years of experience as a pediatric developmental psychologist, I adapt content to meet learners at their individual reading levels and learning styles. I incorporate visual, auditory, and hands-on activities to make learning meaningful and accessible.

What’s your teaching style?
My teaching style is warm, flexible, and inquiry-based. I create a safe, supportive classroom culture where students are encouraged to ask big questions, make personal connections, and think critically. I value creativity, connection, and meaningful dialogue over memorization.

How much will learners get to interact with you?
Learners will have regular and meaningful interaction with me through:

Live class discussions during every session
Breakout group activities and small-group check-ins
Interactive exercises and movement-based learning
Visuals like slides, timelines, and short video clips for enrichment
Optional one-on-one support outside of class—I’m always available to adapt or assist when needed

I am a pediatric developmental psychologist with over 20 years of experience supporting children’s emotional, cognitive, and social development. My work has focused on helping children process complex ideas and emotions in age-appropriate, compassionate ways. I also hold additional credentials as a naturopathic doctor and licensed social worker, further informing my whole-child, trauma-informed teaching approach.

I have been teaching I Survived: Classroom Series as part of an in-person co-op learning program for elementary and middle school-aged students. In this setting, I’ve guided learners through thoughtful discussions about 9/11, using the book to build resilience, empathy, and historical understanding in a developmentally appropriate way.

Over the past two decades, I’ve worked with children in clinical, educational, and therapeutic environments, including schools, homeschool communities, private practice, and family support programs. My approach emphasizes connection, curiosity, and creating a safe space for all learners—especially when exploring sensitive historical events.
