What will be taught?
This course explores the historical events surrounding the sinking of the Titanic through the lens of I Survived the Sinking of the Titanic, 1912 by Lauren Tarshis. Students will strengthen their reading comprehension skills, engage in age-appropriate critical and philosophical thinking, and gain a deeper understanding of this significant historical tragedy in a thoughtful, respectful, and developmentally appropriate way.

The main events of the Titanic disaster and its historical context
Early 20th-century life and maritime travel
Themes of bravery, curiosity, and survival
Character development, plot structure, and narrative voice
Critical thinking about cause and effect, decision-making, and responsibility
Age-appropriate philosophical questions such as:
“What does it mean to be brave in the face of danger?”
“How do we know who to trust in an emergency?”
Reading comprehension strategies tailored to different learning styles and reading levels
