Writing strong, complex sentences is the foundation to effective paragraph writing and then advanced essay writing. This class supports learners in turning simple sentences into detailed, complex sentences, the building blocks of strong paragraph writing. This class is designed to give learners the skills they need in writing sentences, the basic building blocks of longer writing forms. Learners will get comfortable with the basics and the essentials of sentence writing: ✔️what sentences are ✔️what parts they are made from ✔️how they are punctuated ✔️purposes of different kinds of sentences ✔️avoiding run-ons ✔️avoiding fragments ✔️joining sentences ✔️adding details to sentences Weekly Skills Focus: February 25: Complete Sentences/Fragments March 3: Types of Sentences March 10: Types of Sentences March 17: Discovering Subjects and Verbs March 24: Using More Than One Subject March 31: Using More Than One Verb April 7: Spotting Sentence Parts: Articles April 14: Spotting Sentence Parts: Prepositions April 21: Spotting Sentence Parts: Adjectives April 28: Beginning With Capital Letters May 5: Ending Sentences With Punctuation May 12: Avoiding Run On Sentences May 19: Avoiding Incomplete Sentences May 26: Joining Sentences June 2: Using Adjectives to Describe June 9: Choosing A Topic/Related Details June 16: Picture Prompt Creative Sentence Writing/Staying Focused June 23: Complete Sentences/Fragments June 30: Types of Sentences July 7: Types of Sentences July 14: Discovering Subjects and Verbs July 21: Using More Than One Subject July 28: Using More Than One Verb August 4: Spotting Sentence Parts: Articles August 11: Spotting Sentence Parts: Prepositions August 18: Spotting Sentence Parts: Adjectives August 25: Beginning With Capital Letters September 1: Ending Sentences With Punctuation September 8: Avoiding Run On Sentences September 15: Avoiding Incomplete Sentences September 22: Joining Sentences September 29: Using Adjectives to Describe October 6: Choosing A Topic/Related Details October 13: Picture Prompt Creative Sentence Writing/Staying Focused The class follows the following format: 🤔Step 1: Brainstorming Learners start with a simple sentence then brainstorm ideas for adding who, what, where, and when words and phrases, as well as describing words (adjectives and adverbs.) 🗣️Step 2: Oral Sentences As learners add more details to their sentences, they practice reading their new super sentences aloud. While trying out different combinations of descriptive words and phrases, learners become actively involved in the writing process and gain a better understanding of the parts of a sentence. ✏️Step 3: Sentence Writing Now that they're full of ideas, learners can begin to write their own sentences. Writing forms with fun illustrations motivate learners to form super sentences. They can piece together the words and phrases from the brainstorming activity, or come up with words and phrases of their own. ✔️Step 4: Proof and Correct Learners are encouraged to self-edit by reading their work aloud.
