**********If you're interested in this class, please save this listing so I will be notified. With enough interest, I will add some dates to the schedule.********** Cheesy dialogue! Special effects...technically! Overdramatic acting! Outdated clothing and hairstyles! Black and white! Oh no! Go to the movies without leaving your room as we count down to Halloween with horror and sci-fi films from the 1920s-60s. 🍿 👾 👻 🎥 🧠 🎟️ 🧛♂️ 🧟 🎬 🛸 🎞️ 📽️ WATCH: Once per week, we'll be watching a horror or sci-fi movie IN CLASS! We’ll see some genuinely great films, and then there are movies that may have some of you questioning why they were made. But even if you think it’s a “bad” movie, you can still enjoy the cheesiness! (Trust me, cheesiness is pretty much a guarantee.) 🧀 🗣️ DISCUSS: After the film, I'll have you guess the average rating. You may be surprised. Then I'll share some behind the scenes information before turning it over to you to share your opinions and discuss some plot points. To end class, we'll have a sneak peek at next week's selection. 🥳 AFTER CLASS: You'll receive a personalized certificate for "surviving" the film--just for fun. Each movie has a different certificate, featuring characters and quotes from the movie. Frame it! Hang it on the fridge! Show your friends! Be proud of that thing; you've earned it. If you decide to come weekly, we're going to have an ongoing ranking of the movies to see which film comes out on top! 🙋Roll Call! Class needs at least 3 learners. If there are less than 3 learners 24 hours before class, I'll cancel it and refund you. Whatever movie was on the schedule will be pushed to the following week. 🍿***MOVIE SCHEDULE***🍿 Class is scheduled for 90 minutes, but several weeks will be extended 10-15 minutes to allow for discussion. Any changes to the schedule will be announced well in advance. NOW SHOWING... (DATES ARE TBD) Tormented (1960, not rated, 76 mins) A man lets a former flame fall to her death rather than let her interfere with his new relationship, but her ghost returns to disrupt his impending nuptials. The Most Dangerous Game (1932, PG-13, 63 mins) A psychotic big game hunter deliberately strands a luxury yacht on a remote island, where he begins to hunt its passengers for sport. Teenagers from Outer Space (1959, not rated, 85 mins) A sensitive young alien teams up with a teenage human girl to try and protect Earth from an imminent, giant lobster invasion. Yes, you read that correctly. Bonus: it's in color! The Last Man On Earth (1964, not rated, 86 mins) When a disease turns all of humanity into the living dead, the last man on earth becomes a reluctant vampire hunter. The Terror (1963, PG, 79 mins) A young French soldier cut off from his unit is beguiled by a mysterious woman, whom he learns is the wife of the local Baron - and that she seemingly died twenty years earlier. Bonus: it's in color! Nosferatu (1922, not rated, 94 mins) Vampire Count Orlok expresses interest in a new residence and real estate agent Hutter's wife in this silent film. The Cat and the Canary (1927, 108 mins) Relatives of an eccentric millionaire gather in his spooky mansion on the 20th anniversary of his death for the reading of his will. Carnival of Souls (1962, 78 mins) After a traumatic accident, a woman becomes drawn to a mysterious abandoned carnival. The Brain That Wouldn't Die (1962, not rated, 81 mins) A doctor experimenting with transplant techniques keeps his girlfriend's head alive when she is decapitated in a car crash, then goes hunting for a new body. House on Haunted Hill (1959, 75 mins) Rich oddball has a proposal for five guests at a possibly haunted mansion: show up, survive a night filled with scares and receive $10,000 each. Night of the Living Dead (1968, not rated, 96 mins) A ragtag group of Pennsylvanians barricade themselves in an old farmhouse to remain safe from a horde of flesh-eating ghouls that are ravaging the Northeast of the United States. ***Future weeks TBA!*** *** 🤔💭 Questions you may be wondering... - “Why can't we watch something modern?” I want to introduce you to movies you would most likely never watch on your own. There are some hidden gems in here! More importantly, it's illegal! The movies in this class are all in the public domain, which means I am legally allowed to show them in a class like this. I can't do that with newer movies because of copyright laws. - “What if I need to go get a snack, or use the bathroom, or text my friend back? Will you pause it?” Make sure you take care of that before we start. However, each movie will have a five minute intermission somewhere around the middle if anyone needs a break. - “What if I have a question about what's going on?” I'll have everyone stay muted during the movie to avoid distractions, but feel free to use the chat if there's something you need to say/ask. We'll also have some time after the movie to discuss as a group. - “If I hated the movie, can I get my money back?” It's very possible that you won't like a movie on the list, but hopefully you'll still have fun watching and discussing with the class. Roasting a bad movie can be just as fun as praising a good one. But sorry, no refunds if you're not a fan. If you know you're not going to like a movie based on its synopsis or trailer, I suggest pausing that week. Any other questions, please ask!
学習到達目標
Students will…
- watch films from the 1920s-1960s to get a better perspective on the early days of horror/sci-fi
- formulate constructive criticism
- practice supporting their opinions
- enjoy a theater-like experience with their peers

-All movies in this class are in the public domain, which means they have lost their copyright.
-Despite being horror movies, these are tame compared to modern horror's graphic imagery. You can expect mild language, violence, lots of smoking, murder, and references to suicide. Parent Guides are available on IMDB if you're looking for specifics. Let me know and I can direct you to the right place.
-We will be watching these movies during class, so no need to watch anything ahead of time. Encourage your learners to have everything they might need before class starts to avoid interruptions. We will have a 5 min intermission about halfway through the movie.

In college, I minored in film studies. I'm not including this to prove I'm some sort of expert; I'm far from it. But if those courses taught me nothing else, it was to give movies a try. I doubt I ever would've watched a Buster Keaton film on my own, and now I have one of his movie posters on my wall.
I created this class to broaden your movie scope. Chances are you wouldn't give these films a second look, but just because a movie is old (and hasn't aged well in some cases), it still has something to say. Then again, some movies are just bad. I'm looking at you, "Teenagers From Outer Space." Even so, they're fun to watch because of how seriously they take themselves yet end up looking like a comedy.
We also have some notable actors in the mix: Frankenstein's Monster himself, Boris Karloff; Vincent Price, of course; and a very young Jack Nicholson.
At the end of the day, I really just want to expose more people to "House On Haunted Hill" because it's one of my absolute favorite movies of all time, thanks to my dad who showed me when I was around the age of the learners in this class.
