In this class we will examine what made early games successful and some fail, look at the history/ characteristics of designers that stand out in video game history, and spend time playing some of the earliest games designed. Then, we will summarize what made them successful and look at the patterns of successful games. These lessons are easily applied to game design these days and a great intro into a future video game career. We will then take a quick look at current and future careers in the video game industry.

I teach a range of subjects in public high school, including graphic design, computer science, and preparation for the CompTIA A+ Computer Repair Test. On Outschool, I offer classes in math, science, and programming. With over 20 years in public education, I hold a Bachelor’s in Science Education, Master’s degrees in Middle Grades Math and Computer Education/Instructional Technology, and am a Nationally Board Certified teacher with an Educational Specialist Degree in Educational Leadership. My experience spans elementary, middle, and high school levels, enabling me to effectively engage students at varying academic levels and make learning both educational and enjoyable.
My teaching philosophy centers on making technology education accessible, engaging, and relevant. I believe that understanding technology is crucial in today’s world, and my approach is to demystify complex concepts by breaking them into manageable parts. I emphasize hands-on learning and real-world applications, encouraging students to explore, experiment, and solve problems creatively.
I strive to create an inclusive environment where all students feel valued and motivated to learn. By adapting my teaching methods to accommodate diverse learning styles and academic levels, I aim to foster a growth mindset and build confidence in each student’s ability to grasp and apply technological concepts.
Technology is ever-evolving, and I believe in preparing students not just with current knowledge, but with the skills to adapt and innovate as new developments arise.
