Lab: noise pollution lab (supplies needed) Week 12 ------------------- Lecture • the lithosphere • geologic events and processes • desertification • mass movement and erosion • sediment contamination • land use and land management (including food production, agriculture and zoning) • solid and hazardous waste • mining • soil quality Lab: at home mining (supplies needed) Week 13 ------------------- Lecture • the lithosphere • geologic events and processes • desertification • mass movement and erosion • sediment contamination • land use and land management (including food production, agriculture and zoning) • solid and hazardous waste • mining • soil quality Lab: at home soil sampling (supplies needed) Lab 2: soil infiltration (supplies needed) Week 14 ------------------- Lecture •the biosphere and atmosphere •weather and climate • Atmospheric properties and currents •Primary and secondary contaminants • Greenhouse gases • Clean Air Act Lab: interactive air quality lab Week 15------------------- Lecture • potable water and water quality • hypoxia • eutrophication • Clean Water Act • point source and nonpoint source contamination Lab: water filtration (supplies needed) Week 16 ------------------- Lecture • discuss watershed • water quality • discuss Aquifers • discuss water treatment • discuss drought • discuss wetlands Lab: drinking water quality virtual lab (supplies optional) Week 17------------------- Lecture •Learn about solid waste, • trash disposal • Where does trash go? • Where does waste go? • waste reduction Lab: interactive Week 18 Lecture • climate and your health • greenhouse effect • greenhouse gases Lab: interactive --------------------- ☆How is your class structured? • Lecture via powerpoint • Lab will be hands modeling and some virtual simulations. • Discussion in class and on the classroom tab • Data Analysis via shared screen and controls • Practice Activities via shared screen and codes. • Vocabulary via Quizlet and Quizizz • Journaling, documentary viewing, and student research as optional homework extensions Other practice includes but is not limited to data analysis, standardized multiple choice, historical events, video observations. Simulations, and graphing. ☆How will you teach? I will teach using PowerPoint, video, interactive games and practice during lecture. I will teach by conducting the labs or virtual labs with the students. ☆What's your teaching style? My teaching style is to teach the student the content in an engaging manner that allows the learner to interact via discussion using their mic or hands on interaction with the shared mouse feature. Students will be able to practice each with me and continue their studies outside of class where they can interact with me via the teacher tab. I am very supportive, patient and kind. I like to split the class time between learning the content and practicing it. ☆ How much will learners get to interact with you and each other (mention specifics like: lecture, games, slides, video clips, discussion)? Students take turns practicing activities in class where their classmates observe and then will have their turn to practice. Students will discuss video clips and topics with their classmates at a given time in a positive encouraging manner. Students work together to conduct lab data, data analysis, and graphing. ☆ Any required experience or knowledge learners need? Students need to have already taken Biology prior to this course.

Hi! I'm Abbie Butler, a passionate and experienced educator specializing in Life Sciences. I'd love to answer any questions you have – just send me a message!
My Expertise:
* B.S. in Biology, AYA Teaching License (Grades 7-12) in Life Sciences (Muskingum University, 2013)
* 10+ years teaching high school Life Sciences (Biology, Anatomy, Zoology, Oceanography, Nutrition, Botany, Horticulture, Environmental Science) and leading knit and crochet clubs.
* 5+ years of online teaching experience (since 2018).
* Experience tutoring for standardized science exams (OGT, OAA, NCSE, End of Course exams aligned with Ohio and NGSS standards).
* 2 years of online ESL teaching.
My Classes:
I offer engaging and interactive classes in Anatomy, Biology, Zoology, Botany, Environmental Science, and lab-based topics. I also teach crochet to learners aged 12-18 and offer private tutoring.
My Teaching Style:
I believe in hands-on, student-centered learning. My lessons are interactive, incorporating practice and application throughout. A typical class structure involves short teaching segments using Quizizz or PowerPoint, followed by practice questions (multiple choice, diagrams, matching), then another short teaching segment with more practice, culminating in a review and summary.
About Me:
I'm a left-handed crocheter with 14 years of experience. I provide clear explanations, modeling, and supplemental YouTube videos to support your learning. I also enjoy biking, fishing, nature walks, baking (attempts!), crafting with my Cricut, and spending time with my family.
My Teaching Philosophy:
I'm committed to helping you achieve mastery and long-term retention of the material. I believe learning is most effective when you're actively involved. My classes are designed to be fun and engaging, leaving you confident in your new knowledge. Hyperdocs with Google Docs are used to share resources on the day of class.
Class Policies:
* Cancellations: If a class doesn't meet minimum enrollment, I'll contact enrolled students to discuss options: proceed with the smaller class or transfer to another section. If no students arrive, I'll wait 5-10 minutes and then record the lesson for later viewing.
* Refunds/Transfers: Most classes follow a "Limited" refund policy: refunds are available up to one week before the class or within 24 hours of purchase. After that, transfers are possible up to 24 hours before class. No-shows are not refunded but may receive a recording.
* Recordings: I generally post recordings upon parent request or weekly, if I remember to post them automatically. Recordings are accessible in the classroom.
* Flex Classes: I am currently revamping my flex class offerings. Recordings of live classes can be used with provided materials for self-paced learning.
Specials & Coupons: Check class descriptions for special offers!
Thank you for your interest! I look forward to seeing you in class!
Sincerely,
Abbie
