Course Description: This course is designed to help students learn Latin using the Henle Latin books. It is the perfect course for those studying Latin via Memoria Press or Classical Conversations and need more help/support or review. Upon the completion of this course students will be able to define basic Latin vocabulary of approximately 50-80 words; reproduce paradigms of basic Latin forms; identify the grammatical forms and syntactical functions of Latin words of these nouns, adjectives, and verbs; and translate basic Latin sentences and explain their syntax; begin to compose short sentences in Latin. Students will have approximately 3-4 hours of homework to complete each week (this will vary based on the student's abilities). This course meets 2x per week, but should be treated as a 5x per week class because of the homework that needs to be completed. Each class will introduce a new grammar concept, practice and review previous material, and discuss a cultural theme if applicable. Beyond acquiring the skills to translate Latin, students will also be learning about the culture, literature, and history of the Classical world. Their English vocabulary will improve. They will better understand English grammar and syntax. And they will build a foundation for learning other languages, particularly Romance languages.

All students must have a physical copy of Henle Latin First Year. It is also strongly recommended that all students also have Cassell's Latin Dictionary (an orange book).
