This 16-week course is designed to cover the second half of a typical high school level chemistry curriculum. However, this does not mean that interested younger learners should not take this class. Anyone interested in learning about chemistry in an engaging way at their own pace should sign up for this class. Each block of instruction is described below and will include hands-on lab experiments to compliment the material being learned in the class. Each week, a new lesson will be posted for students to complete at their own pace. Each lesson includes approximately an hour of video lecture and includes fill-in-the-blank note pages and practice problems for the students to complete. Block 1: Physical and Chemical Properties Lesson 1: States of Matter & Chemical vs. Physical Properties - States of matter review - Chemical vs. Physical Properties Lesson 2: States of Matter and Temperature - Heating and Cooling effects on matter - Phase Changes Lesson 3: Solids & Liquids - Properties of Solids - Properties of Liquids Lesson 4: Solutions - Properties of Solutions Lesson 5: Gases - Properties of Gases - Ideal Gas Law Lesson 6: Light - Light and the Electromagnetic Spectrum Block 2: Advanced Chemical Reactions Lesson 7: Basics of Acid-Base Reactions - Acids and Bases - pH and pOH Lesson 8: Acid/Base Strengths and Titrations - Acid/Base Strength - Titrations Lesson 9: REDOX reactions - Reduction-Oxidation Reactions Balancing REDOX Reactions Lesson 10: Galvanic Cells - Galvanic Cells Lesson 11: Batteries and Solar Cells - Batteries - Solar Cells Block 3: Equilibrium Lesson 12: Kinetics - Reaction Rates and Rate Laws Lesson 13: Equilibrium part 1 - What is Equilibrium and Le Chatelier's principle Lesson 14: Equilibrium part 2 - Reaction Quotient & Equilibrium Constant Lesson 15: Equilibrium part 3 - Equilibrium Calculations Lesson 16: Equilibrium part 4 - Applying Equilibrium to solubility & acids and bases This is a flexible schedule course, meaning that there are no live meetings. Each week new videos, notes pages, and practice problems will be posted to the classroom. The completed practice problems will be uploaded to the classroom (either scanned or a picture taken) for feedback from the teacher. There will be a discussion thread where students can ask for help from the class and the teacher. Each week an experiment will be posted that follows the lesson material. To increase interaction between students, there will be weekly experiments and the students will be asked to post their experimental results and anything they learned to the Outschool classroom either as a video or pictures. This will allow the students to share and discuss what each other are discovering about chemistry hands-on. Also, each week the teacher will divide the students up into different groups and they will be given a topic from the week's material to discuss and present a 5-10 minute session on. This way the students will hear more about topics in the class from their classmates and not just the teacher. To get the most out of this course, the teacher will provide notes pages with blanks for the students to fill in as they watch the videos. Students are expected to complete the practice problems each week as the material builds upon itself weekly. The teacher is always available via message (either in the classroom discussion or private message) and will typically reply within 12 hours, but never more than 24 hours unless extenuating circumstances.

The labs used in this course to supplement the material are all safe and use things found in a traditional kitchen. No special laboratory equipment or chemicals are needed. Everything can be found around your house or in a grocery store. No harmful substances will be used. At times, the use of the stove to heat water is required, but students will be advised to seek parental supervision when performing any experiments that require use of the stove.
