このクラスで学べること

Welcome to the Sea of Thieves! In this online role playing game players are tasked with sailing the seas, discovering lost treasure, hunting and fishing unique species, and defending themselves against ghostly apparitions and other pirates alike. Whether you have played the game for years or are brand new to the seas, all pirates are welcome here!

Classes will be held for 1 to 3 students and we will select the appropriate ship size dependent on how many students join the session that week.

We will work cooperatively as a team to seek out adventure in both a PvE (Player versus Environment) and PvP (Player versus Player) environment. Sea of Thieves has numerous fun events taking place at any time, including fighting gigantic sharks, solving riddles and digging up buried treasure, and dodging volcanic blasts while battling skeletons. The game is remarkably open and sessions will often be student-led by their desire of what they would like to do that week. The teacher will also come prepared with guided voyages and tasks.

Learners will need to have the game installed on their platform of choice, as well as have given the teacher their Gamertag's in advance of the meeting to allow for quick entry to the game to maximize our time on the seas.

Come and enjoy our time together as Pirate Lords!

*Sea of Thieves can be enjoyed by both Xbox and PC players (and starting April 30 2024, Playstation Pirates as well!). The game is also "free" with a subscription to Xbox Gamepass which gives access to hundreds of games for a monthly subscription fee. The game is rated T for Teen by the ESRB.

** Sea of Thieves is a game reliant on teamwork. Understanding the heavy reliance on teamwork, and that the game plays better when the proper sized ship is selected for the number of players, please be aware that if your learner is more than 10 minutes late to class (with no advance warning) they may forfeit their place on a ship for that session.

Sea of Thieves is rated T for Teen by the ESRB. From the ESRB: "This is an action-adventure game in which players assume the role of a pirate exploring a vast open world of oceans and islands. From a first-person perspective, players sail ships, search for treasure, and engage in sea battles with rivals. On land, players can shoot and slash at skeleton-like creatures; enemies generally disappear with a wisp of smoke. At sea, players can shoot cannons at opposing ships, causing them to capsize and sink. During the course of the game, players' character can drink mugs of grog, resulting in a screen-blurring effect; belching and hiccup sounds are sometimes heard. Characters may also vomit after drinking too much grog; green vomit is sometimes seen dripping down the screen."

Hello, Outschoolers!

My name is John and I have been a scientist and educator for over 15 years. I hold a Bachelor of Science (Honors in Biology), Master of Applied Sciences, and a Ph.D. in biology. Over my BSc, MSc and PhD I have designed and delivered courses for students aged 3 to 63 for class sizes ranging from one-on-one lessons to classrooms of over 300 students.

I have professionally taught subjects such as Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Astronomy, and Math, as well as more focused lessons such as courses in Public Speaking, Time Management, and Conversation Skills. I have worked as a scientific mentor and instructor to students in elementary school all the way to university. I hold certificates for 150-hour Teaching English as a Foreign Language and 250-hour Intensive Teaching certificates, and have participated in seminars for Grading and Giving Feedback to students. I have given scientific conference presentations to audiences of more than 700 people, and have published a number of peer-reviewed scientific articles. I also have experience coaching a variety of sports including hockey, basketball, and volleyball. I have been teaching courses online for 5 years to more than 1200 students.

I am a lifelong student and love to learn new things each day. My teaching philosophy revolves around this idea, that every student has a lot of their own to offer and I always try to relate any topic to a student's interest. You may find classes of mine that take popular culture and relate these hobbies and interests with academic concepts to help students relate to the material. My classes are often heavy in discussion (though no student is forced to speak if they do not want to) and we expand on the material in each lesson based on what students are most interested in. This often results in courses that interest me in particular and that I think can offer students a lot of value and critical thinking skills. I teach high-level academic courses, as well as conversation-based community development to foster interest in sharing things students enjoy.

Private, personalized tutoring is also available. Send me a message if interested.

I hope to see you all in class soon!

John
