During weeks one and 16, your child will take the ADAM K - 7 Math Assessment to gauge overall learning during the class. Each lesson also includes a pre- and post-test to gauge student learning. Your student will also have their math fact fluency and other timing-based skills charted on the Standard Celeration Chart. We will use the Outschool classroom to keep track of assignments, which means you will have a built-in portfolio to demonstrate your child's growth in math throughout the semester. I will also provide a progress report mid-semester and a report card at the end of class. These reports will detail your child's present skill level in math and recommendations for what to do next.

Please note that this is the live version of this course, with class meetings three times per week. There is also a flex course if that better meets your needs!

This fall-semester math class, along with the corresponding spring class, can be used as an entire year of math for your fifth-grade homeschooler (or your homeschooler of any age working on fifth-grade math standards). On the first class meeting of each week, I will give a quick pre-test, introduce the week's topic, provide opportunities for practice, and give feedback on student work. In the second class of the week, we will continue to practice the given skill together as well as playing review games and working on class projects. In the third class each week, students will demonstrate their mastery of the subject by taking an assessment, teaching a mini-lesson to their peers, or unveiling a project they've completed during the week. On an ongoing basis, students will also practice math facts to fluency as well as getting lots of practice interpreting and solving word problems.

This class will loosely follow the Saxon 6/5 textbook, heavily supplemented by fluency-based programs such as Morningside Math Facts. This class is taught by a certified elementary and special education teacher with a background in autism, direct instruction, and precision teaching. Students with diverse learning needs are encouraged to sign up for this class!

This class uses several 3rd-party resources to enrich instruction. Nearpod - Students do not need an account to access Nearpod. They will be given a code for any lessons we complete on Nearpod. Only the student and I will be able to see their work. Gimkit - Students do not need an account to play Gimkit, although an account may enhance their experience. Sometimes during class, I will provide a game code and students may join and play interactively only with the other members of our class. I will be supervising this play, which reinforces the math concept of the week. There is no chat feature in Gimkit. Classkick - Students do not need an account to access Classkick, but using their gmail to log in rather than using the assignment code will make it easier for them to access assignments. Either of these methods of access are acceptable. Classkick is a place for students to edit documents such as worksheets. I can watch students work in realtime and provide immediate feedback. Only I can see each student's work. PrecisionX - This site allows students, or me, to chart their progress on the Standard Celeration Chart. For some classes, I may ask students to be in charge of their own charting. If I do so, I will provide them with a teacher-made username and password. If asked to use this resource, only the student, the guardian, and myself will have access to their data. LetsGoLearn - Students will be given a teacher-made username and password in order to sign in to this assessment twice per semester, once as a pretest and once as a post-test. This site is an automated assessment of math skills that will guide students through the test and provide questions based on ongoing student performance.
