When Astrid Lindgren sent in her manuscript for Pippi Longstocking she was rejected at first. The publisher felt the book promoted children to misbehave. Today we view Astrid's characters differently and often see them as good role models for children because they are kind, brave, smart and always act as just children. This class will be centered around the girls in Astrid's books and what we can learn from them. We will start with the world's strongest girl Pippi and work our way up to Ronia the Robber's daughter, Astrid's last book. The themes will be kindness, bravery, follow our hearts and that girls can do anything they set their minds to. In class, I will tell the basic story of the character and what makes them good role models for all of us. The books we will be working with are: Pippi Longstocking Pippi in the Park The children of Noisyvillage Christmas in Noisyvillage Lotta on Troublemaker street Lotta's bike Madicken/Michevous Meg My most beloved sister Ronia The robber's Daughter I will also talk a little bit about Emil of Lönneberga and The Brothers Lionheart
