Fractions is a HUGE and often intimidating topic! This course takes a slow pace with the mindset of understanding in a marathon rather than sprint format. Every week we will start off with a number sense activity reviewing vital skills for understanding fractions. More specifically, skills that include factoring, multiplication and division facts, etc. Following the warm up activity a the main 15 to 20 minute lesson will follow, followed by an interactive practice session for students to participate in and receive feedback in. This ongoing course will sort through equivalent fractions, reducing fractions, converting from improper fractions to mixed fractions, adding and subtracting fractions with common and uncommon denominators and varying formats, multiplying and dividing fractions formats. Be sure to review the weekly schedule! Guided notes are available and can be provided upon request! Learners should use a device that can access Google Jamboard. A laptop, chromebook, ipad, macbook, or window surface are all compatible. No Google account is necessary to participate! Using a cell phone for class will limit the students ability to participate on the Jamboard. Danielle Jones, Founder of Math For The Middles
I am a holistic and proud urban math teacher intentionally using my classroom influence to empower students from all walks of life. My organization's objective is to build life-long learners equipped to detect and conquer the explicit and implicit math seamlessly absorbed into our everyday lives. We strive to supply a palpable meaning and use to a contents' existence that can either empower you or disenfranchise your life long decision making skills. Math For The Middles' motto is, "Enlighten, Empower, Release and Repeat". My professional background includes over 6 years of teaching a combination of middle school and high school Pre Algebra and Algebra 1. Throughout my career I've been awarded Student Mentorship Awards and Teacher of the Month. I am also 2x finalist for teacher of Teacher of the Year in my building.
What's our take on "NEW MATH" aka Common Core?
Truthfully, we don't believe there is a new math. Math exists with or without our acknowledgement.
However, we understand the frustration. At Math For The Middles, our strategies are based in mathematical accuracy. Learners are taught to conceptually understand concepts, become fluent with procedures and algorithms and best of all be able to reason mathematically. This means we use whatever strategy works best for enrolled learners and we do not exclude any methods that hold up mathematically nor exclusively use only one method. "It's okay to carry the one with us😉"
