This 8 session FLEX course is a combination of all my one-time classes in my Crack the Code series, but also includes work with High Frequency words that break the syllable type rules and spelling multisyllable words.. My Crack the Code series focuses on the decoding side of the Simple View of Reading.

The Simple View of Reading is:
Decoding (D) x Language Comprehension (LC) = Reading Comprehension (RC)

In this course, we will start building the bridge to reading comprehension by focusing on the basics of decoding. Once they have learned about a syllable type, they will go on word hunts in their favorite books and practice using their new decoding skills. This will help transfer their decoding skills to real life reading.

Each week or two, students will learn about one of the 6 syllable types (D). Students will also be introduced to high frequency words (HFW) that look like they should follow the syllable patterns, but break the syllable rules. They will be given strategies to help remember these words. Once students have finished a class presentation, they will be expected to go on a word hunt in their favorite books to look for words that follow the syllable type. They will write their words in large print on a white board or paper and syllabicate it explaining the process. Then the student can read the sentence or 2 from their book with the word in it (LC) and tell the class about what is happening in their book. (RC) This process will be recorded and posted to the classroom for other students to see and comment. I will model and explain this process in a video.

The format for each class will look something like this:
I will use an interactive Bitmoji classroom. A video will be posted on how to use the classroom.
* Review of a skill and share and/or comment on student work from the previous class
* Introduce a new or expand on a previous syllable type.
* Practice the new syllable in reading multi syllable words
* Practice High Frequency Words (HFW) that are rule breaker for a syllable generalization
* Practice spelling words (single, multi syllable and HFW) though dictation. Students will be expected to take a picture of their dictated words and/or sentences and submit to the classroom.

This schedule is always SUBJECT TO CHANGE depending on the learners. They will help pace the class.

Even though we will learn how letters can sound differently when placed next to another letter or where they are located in a word, students will need to be fluent in their basic letters and sounds.

I will upload the lessons each week to be ready on Mondays. Learners are expected to complete and post all activities by Fridays so I can review it and give needed feedback before I post a new lesson.

Please feel free to message me with questions, but I do work at a brick and mortar school during the day so answering messages will most likely be after those school hours. I will do my best to get back to you as soon as possible. I am in the Central time zone.

Remember that reading struggles and enrichments do not have age limits, so if your learner is outside the age range, please reach out to me for more information about the class if trying to decide if it is right for your learner.

REFUNDS:
I use the 'LIMITED' refund policy for my classes.
This means that learners can withdraw with a refund up to 1 WEEK before class starts, or within 24 hours of purchase. Therefore, I will not refund for withdraws outside this window.

In my 25+ years of teaching I have been trained in all kinds of different ways to teach students to read. This most recent method of teaching students to understand how and why letters make different sounds when put with other letters and placed in certain parts of the words has completely changed my way of thinking. I have seen huge gains in the students I work with in my brick and mortar school by teaching students the syllable types and how those syllable types work together to make bigger words.
