Have a great character idea but not sure what happens next? In this fun and supportive fiction writing course, young storytellers will learn how to build their own short story from scratch — one piece at a time. Each week, we’ll focus on a key element of storytelling: a strong main character, a vivid setting, a believable antagonist, an exciting plot structure and a satisfying ending. Through guided discussions, writing prompts, and printable planning sheets, learners will develop their own original story step by step. Each lesson will include: - Teaching on a specific story element (e.g. character, plot) - Discussion and the chance to discover the story element in familiar books or films - Teaching on a relevant literary device or aspect of grammar or punctuation (e.g. using visual imagery or how to punctuate direct speech) - Prompts, printables or sentence-building activities to help learners bring their own ideas to life with vivid, engaging writing - Independent writing time - Optional: students who wish to may read aloud an excerpt from their writing to benefit from peer feedback Homework: To create a complete story, many learners will want to spend some time completing paragraphs or adding to their story outside class time. Learners may submit their writing for personalised teacher feedback. Please submit homework within one week of the lesson to give me time to respond to everybody. This class is perfect for - Learners who are full of story ideas but need a little help organising and presenting them as a real story - Students who enjoyed my one-time class "Fiction Writing Workshop: Design a Main Character" - Writers who want to gain confidence expressing and sharing their ideas - Any learner with a big imagination This course is a great follow-up to “Fiction Writing Workshop: Design a Main Character” — or a perfect starting point for any young writer ready to turn their ideas into a real story!
