This course is for the fashion historians and budding fashion designers. This course will combine art history (fashion history) and drawing. Each class we will objectly explore a fashion year, theme or big event in society with the help of primary and secondary sources. Through sources, and images of historical fashion, we as a group will get to take a closer, unbiased look at the events, and years that changed style and design for women globally. The class time will be split into theory and practical learning, giving students and opportunity to design and respond to the theme discussed through drawing.

Theory/ History (25 min): How does historical events impact fashion trends? This course will explore how changes in society and the world impacted women’s fashion in the years 1901 - 2001. We will consult museum collections, primary and secondary resources during our discussion in slides to gain an honest look and understanding of not only fashion trends, but the historical events that shaped them. We will touch upon parallels found in today’s fashion trends, as well as exploring the importance of fashion history, designers, design houses and historical moments. We will use sources, discussion and images of fashion styles to provide an unbiased look at fashion history.

Practical / Drawing and Design (30 min): Students will explore a new fashion figure poses each week through step by step line and proportion drawing. We will be explore the Elements and Principles of Art and Design consulting different drawing techniques and elements - form, movement, direction, balance (to name a few). Students are encouraged to take their time and are not limited to the class time to finish their drawing.
