Fashion History and Design Fashion History Design Club - Fashion Model Drawing & Outfit Sketches This course is for the fashion historians and budding fashion designers. This course will combine art history (fashion history) and drawing. Each class we will objectly explore a fashion year, theme or big event in society with the help of primary and secondary sources. Through sources, and images of historical fashion, we as a group will get to take a closer, unbiased look at the events, and years that changed style and design for women globally. The class time will be split into theory and practical learning, giving students and opportunity to design and respond to the theme discussed through drawing. Theory/ History (25 min): How does historical events impact fashion trends? This course will explore how changes in society and the world impacted women’s fashion in the years 1901 - 2001. We will consult museum collections, primary and secondary resources during our discussion in slides to gain an honest look and understanding of not only fashion trends, but the historical events that shaped them. We will touch upon parallels found in today’s fashion trends, as well as exploring the importance of fashion history, designers, design houses and historical moments. We will use sources, discussion and images of fashion styles to provide an unbiased look at fashion history. Practical / Drawing and Design (30 min): Students will explore a new fashion figure poses each week through step by step line and proportion drawing. We will be explore the Elements and Principles of Art and Design consulting different drawing techniques and elements - form, movement, direction, balance (to name a few). Students are encouraged to take their time and are not limited to the class time to finish their drawing. Experience: This course does not have any prerequisites, although an interest in fashion history and drawing is an asset. The following is a summary of the first 5 weeks of the class syllabus: Fashion Theme: Japan This week we will explore the history of fashion in Japan. What did and does traditional Japanese fashion look like? How did the fashion from Japan impact trends around the rest of the world? Fashion Theme: Pioneer This week we will explore the fashion of pioneers of North America and how pop culture would later bring those styles back. Does pioneer fashion make it to the couture runways? Fashion Theme: Cottage Core This week we will explore the tumblr fashion trend that took over 2020, Cottage core. How can we relate this fashion trend back in history? Fashion Theme: India This week we will explore the history of fashion in India. What did and does traditional Indian fashion look like? How did the fashion from India impact trends around the rest of the world? What is Bollywood fashion? Fashion Theme: Civil War This week we will explore the history of fashion during the Civil War. How did historical events affect fashion? This week we will explore the fashion of princesses throughout history, the globe and princesses in film. How accurate are the costume designs of our favorite princesses?

Students will learn about patterns in history, that directly impacted fashion styles and trends. Students will improve figure drawing and fashion drawing through using proportion and other drawing techniques and step by step guidance.

I have a Masters in Arts Management and a Bachelor of Arts in both Fine Arts and History. I have been teaching for 10 years in schools and art galleries to children aged 3 - 17 in ESL, Drama, and Art. I am a practicing private fashion illustrator working. I work with each student individually -- no matter the class size, together we consider their creative style and celebrate their individual artistic mark.
