Do you know your OC from your OTP? * 
Do you ship various characters or keep them strictly canon? 
In this one time class, we will explore the world of celebrating the enjoyment of a fandom by bringing it to life in writing. 
We will look at what makes fanfiction unique among writing genres, how to successfully stay true to that universe and the characters in it and how to keep it canon. As well as making narrative and dialogue convincing, we'll look at what happens when we introduce a non-canon character or play with the idea of a different timeline, setting or even changing a character's gender.
We will look at the tricky area of self - insertion into a 'fic' and how to recognise and avoid the dreaded Mary Sue.
We'll also touch on what to do if learners want to share their fanfiction with like-minded fans, what to do about disclaimers and the matter of betas and feedback.

* Original Character and One True Pairing. Brownie points for already knowing that!

structuring stories to suit the various styles of fanfiction, as well as the ways that fanfiction differs from other story writing, characterisation, dialogue, working within an already established setting, pitfalls to avoid, the pros and cons and rules of publishing on fan sites, how to deal with feedback.

No inappropriate content in the class- but fanfiction websites will be referred to, with explanations that members need to be aware of the minimum age for joining and what to be aware of should they wish to do so at some point.

Writing is my passion and as well as majoring in English at university, I've almost 20 years experience in teaching many subjects- but primarily English- in schools. 
I've edited work by young writers and have critiqued and helped those sharing work on fanfiction.net as well as being requested by several writers to act as their 'beta' (proofreader/ editor ) and believe that taking something that a young person is passionate about and creating fiction about it is a highly effective way to develop writing skills.
