This class prepares students for the decisions they will need to make as adults. Financial literacy, the importance of saving, budgeting, and consumer math combined together with simulations, projects, and role-playing scenarios to prepare students to be more financially knowledgeable. 

Students will be working with internet websites to improve mathematical skills, research strategies, consumer awareness, and critical thinking. Some websites that students may be asked to navigate to (specific links posted on the classroom page or sent into the chat) include AirBnB, Hotels.com, Amazon.com, Walmart.com, and Zillow.com

Sample projects might include:
1. Role-play as a realtor: find the perfect house for a client
2. Grocery shopping on a budget
3. Buying a new computer: value vs. quality
4. Planning a family vacation
5. Furnishing an apartment on a budget
6. Creating an advertisement to sell an item
7. Planning a budget date night


Sample Class Schedule
Week 1: : Income, expenses, a budget at a glance (math concept: pie charts, working with percents)

Week 2: Cutting expenses, discretionary spending, what are subscription services, apps to help you save money (math concept; money word problems)

Week 3: Analyzing an earning statement, sample paychecks, net vs. gross pay, commission (piece work, straight commission, salary, hourly, hourly plus commission), types of jobs with commission, deductions (math concept: calculating gross pay)

Week 4: Writing and cashing checks, check cashing fees, money orders, other types of payment (math concept: decimals to percents, word problems, writing checks)

Thank you for visiting my Outschool profile! Since I was 5 years-old, I knew that I wanted to be a teacher. Now, 7 years in my career, I still love it. There is nothing that I enjoy more than helping my students reach their goals and become better readers, writers, and thinkers. 

In my classes, I work with all levels of students (IEP students, general education, and high ability students).   My goal as a teacher is to foster critical thinking and  communication skills in order to help your child achieve their goals and become more proficient readers, writers, and critical thinkers. More than that, I encourage students to fall in love with learning.

For Outschool, I teach literature-based courses, novel studies, writing courses, grammar, vocabulary/etymology, test prep, and reading comprehension/strategies. My classes cater to all learning types and students are expected to participate in order to get the most out of the lesson. Students will complete my classes feeling accomplished and successful, as building confidence and true enjoyment in the subject is my first priority.

In my free time, I enjoy traveling, reading, and being frequently caffeinated.

-BS in Education (Reading/English 3-12, Gifted Education 3-12, Special Education 5-12)
-TESOL (120 hour) certified
-Masters of Arts In English Teaching
-Certification in High Ability/Gifted Learning Strategies
-Certification in Teaching Students with Learning Exceptionalities
-SAT/PSAT Testing Administrator (5 years)
-Experience tutoring for a variety of tests (ACT/SAT, ISEE, SHSAT, STAR, NWEA, AP, etc.)
-Harkness Socratic Seminar Trained 
-Indiana Writing Workshop Trained
