In this engaging four-week weather course, students will explore how the Sun interacts with Earth's atmosphere to create various weather conditions. Classes will be conducted using NearPod interactive slides and will include discussions, games, and hands-on activities.
Week 1: We will begin by examining how the Sun's energy powers the water cycle, leading to precipitation. Students will create a model using common household materials to visualize this process.
Week 2: Students will learn about different forms of precipitation and will create their own rain gauge and/or snow gauge. A fun Kahoot game will be used to assess their understanding of the material.
Week 3: The focus will shift to how the Sun generates wind through the heating and cooling of the atmosphere. Students will construct wind vanes and anemometers to measure wind in their area, and they will explore live weather data from the National Weather Service.
Week 4: We will conclude by learning about pressure systems and jet streams, analyzing weather maps, and understanding how these maps assist meteorologists in predicting future weather conditions. Throughout the course, each student will maintain a weather journal documenting conditions in their area, which we will share at the beginning of each class. The final activity will be an interactive game to assess the knowledge gained throughout the course. This course provides a comprehensive understanding of weather patterns and phenomena, making it ideal for young learners interested in meteorology and environmental science."
